Fort McAllister State Historic Park

About

Located south of Savannah, Ft. McAllister is a 1,725 acre state park and historic site that offers a fort, museum, campground, hiking, fishing &kayaking.

Description

Fort McAllister State Historic Park was founded in 1964, with the goal of preserving the original earthen fortifications for the enjoyment and education of the general public. Originally designed as two separate attractions (Fort McAllister Historic Site and Richmond Hill State Park), the size of both sites grew to border each other, leading to the combination of both attractions into one historic park, both beautiful and unique.

In time, campsites were introduced as the popularity of mobile homes took off. What started out with only a handful of campsites along the Ogeechee River, has now expanded to more than 65 campsites for RVs, mobile homes, and tents. Our campground, Savage Island (named after the prominent colonial landowner Thomas Savage), is a hammock island surrounded by beautiful marshes, tidal rivers, and the easily accessible Redbird Creek.

Fort McAllister State Historic Park features fishing piers, hiking trails, playgrounds, picnic shelters as well as a Group Shelter often rented for weddings, family reunions, and other events. Rental canoes, kayaks, paddle-boards and bikes are all available for use on our roads, trails and waterways. Boat access is available to the general public for the Ogeechee River, with a separate boat launch in our campground just for campers.

Our rangers are always available, and ready to help. Public programs relating to history or nature are often available, including reenactments and living history events. Contact the park office for any questions regarding our program and event schedules, or check our page on the Georgia State Parks website for more information.
