Horrible experience at Fort Mitchell National Cemetery. They have cut the services to thirty minutes with a supervision of a staff member counting your time. The employee acted like a game warden with the rudeness that she displayed to members at the service. This CSM was not even given time to be recognized for his heroic acts in Republic of Vietnam. You would've thought it was a civilian graveside. I am a Veteran that will choose not to be buried there. My WW2 dad is buried there but the funerals in the past were beautiful not someone standing there counting the time. Our National Cemetery's used to be sacred places for our heroes, now they are like revolving doors for the deceased. God help
Update 03/2023: Section 5 is still a partial sandbox. Disgraceful. The rest of the cemetery looks fine. I don't get it. Peaceful setting, but sloppy and uneven work. They just moved the headstones and left the dirt to crust inside the names. On several occasions, weeds are left to grow up around the headstones. Balloons, lights, and signs which are prohibited are left for days, even weeks yet the fresh flowers placed in remembrance of my father's passing were collected TWO days after the anniversary. Bathrooms are hit and miss; sometimes no soap and toilet paper.
My wife is buried here and I will eventually be here too. My wife's family would not come to the gravesite with me, instead they gave me flowers, to put in with the urn. When the caretaker offered to let me put a scoop of dirt into the hole, I lost it, he was very kind and understanding. I just was not ready at the point. The staff waited while I was crying uncontrollably and made no move, even though it took a while, until I was ready.
My gruncle was just buried here. They did an amazing funeral service in memory to him. You have several choices depending on what branch of the military they were in. My gruncle was Navy, so we got a very honorable service.
My Vietnam Vet father was recently buried here, full military honors. His service was exemplary and everything we imagined. Spending most of our time at Ft. Benning and not seeing Ft Mitchell's grounds prior, we were impressed with its peacefulness and beauty.
We would note that Mrs. Talley, Fort Mitchell staff and the director served us with conern, love, and respect from the beginning to the end. We can only say, "THANK YOU!" Our family and friends were most appreciative for the service rendered ON DAY OF THE BURIAL FOR OUR LOVE ONE. Even the ground staff shared concern and honor. Thank You! The Army Honor staff that were assigned for our service did a great job. Army Chaplin came and listened to our love one life's story. On the day of the service, he painted a blessed picture that caused all of us to smile and experience moments of joy. He shared God's words that continues to lift our HEARTS. Thank You! JUST A BLESSED EXPERIENCE!
Thank you Fort Mitchell and Honor Guard. My father's service was beautiful.
Always well maintained and respectful of the veterans who served and the spouses who supported them.
