Description

The Friends of Hoboken Charter School, a 501 (c)(3) charitable organization (EIN: 22-3519265), raises funds and supports activities to benefit the Hoboken Charter School and its students. The Hoboken Charter School is a K-12 community of learners that seeks to develop the academic, artistic, personal and civic growth of all its members through its commitment to service learning and learner-centered education.

The mission of the Hoboken Charter School reflects our belief that a successful educational experience can only take place when attention is given to the development of the whole child — a break with the traditional concept of schooling. We envision a community composed of learners of all ages that fosters a spirit of supportive interdependence, where individuals can grow in a nurturing, compassionate environment that reflects the history and diversity of the larger Hoboken community.

The Hoboken Charter School was conceived and developed by a group of Hoboken parents and professional educators. On January 15, 1997, HCS was chartered by New Jersey State Commissioner of Education Leo Klagholz. Our charter was renewed in 2001 and again in 2006. The school’s founders believe that a community composed of learners of all ages fosters a spirit of collaboration that is a necessary part of a successful educational experience. We believe that students thrive in environments where expectations are clear and consistent at all levels, and where students are known — not only by their peers, but by the entire school community. An emphasis on curriculum that places the student at the center of inquiry is the foundation for the school’s four critical learning “cornerstones.” These cornerstones are: rigorous academics, arts literacy, and personal and civic growth.

Through service learning, students bring the community into the classroom and extend the walls of the classroom out into the community. Service learning offers a way to tie the curriculum to community action. Students at the Hoboken Charter School identify community problems; design, implement, and evaluate action plans; and engage in ongoing personal reflection. Through these experiences, students become active, contributing members of the school community, the city of Hoboken, and beyond. In developing this approach, the Hoboken Charter School has developed relationships with a wide variety of individuals and groups within the Hoboken community.

This orientation to action is modeled by the Hoboken Charter School staff. Through their participation in a school-based teacher-as-researcher program, teachers not only gain insight into the pursuit of understanding and the practice of teaching, but redefine their roles as educators, researchers and policy makers. In addition, as a public institution, the Hoboken Charter School encourages parents and community members to utilize the resources of the school as a site for their own lifelong learning.

Hoboken Charter School serves 200 students annually in grades K to 12, with grades 9 to 12 housed in a separate space. The school was conceived and developed by a group of Hoboken parents and professional educators and received its first New Jersey State Charter in 1997. An emphasis on curriculum that places the student at the center of inquiry serves as the foundation for the school’s four critical learning cornerstones: rigorous academics, arts literacy, personal growth and civic growth. The generous outpouring of support from the local community and beyond in the wake of the fire is a testimony to how effectively the Hoboken Charter School has implemented service learning into the daily lives of the students and the greater community.
