Friends of Santa Barbara Public Library

Description

On May 1, 1952, the first meeting of the Friends of the Santa Barbara Public Library was held. Since that first meeting many advances and changes have occurred in the world, and in our lives, that were unimaginable at the time. The past five decades have brought us the polio vaccine, frozen food, contact lenses, and the pill. We now have credit cards, laser beams, computers and digital cameras. Man has invented air conditioners, clothes dryers, and fast food. We have watched as a Man walked on the Moon.

Over the years, the Library, through the support and funding from the Friends has also seen many advances and changes. The Library started its collection of long playing records in 1955. That was also the year a $300,000 bequest made it possible to renovate and remodel the library. We have provided the seed money first for the Library's books on tape then for Books and Music on CD; first for video tape and then later the DVD collection. We acquired drive-up book bins, equipped the Faulkner Gallery for a wide range of activities, with gifts of a movie projector, sound apparatus, chairs and a lectern. Through the generous gifts from the Friends, the Library was provided with many extras from clocks to patio beautification to book fairs; from large print books to radio programs, from an aquarium for the children's room to culturally-rich music, dance and art programs, and of course book collections. The Friends are dedicated to fully funding the entire Children's Programming at the Library.

In 2002, during the Golden Jubilee of the Friends of the Library, the Board recognized and acknowledged all that had been accomplished in the past 50 years. We also realized that in order to insure that our Library and our community were positioned to embrace the advances and changes that will come in the next 50 years, an endowment fund would be needed. Several bequests and gifts have given us the seed money for this recently created Endowment Fund which will serve our community for generations to come.

Since our 50th Anniversary, we continue to partner with the Library staff to help fulfill their greatest needs. It was during this time that we started our annual Special Campaign to raise money for the expansion of a specific collection or to enhance and support programming. We have focused this campaign to "Buy a Book for the Library," "Buy a Book on CD" or "Buy a DVD" to expand these collections. This year our Special Campaign is to fund the Children's Programming at the Library.

As book lovers and lovers of reading, the Friends believe that a good library is essential to the intellectual and cultural growth and well being of our community.

Mission

The mission of the Santa Barbara Friends of the Library is to inspire and encourage our community to provide resources that will ensure a superior public library that serves our diverse population.

An amazing resource for our town full of dedicated and hard working public servants who work their hardest every day to help share knowledge to anyone seeking it. Thank you Librarians for all that you do for our community!
This library, like most all of them, is wonderful. The staff is great, the place is clean, and it's wonderful to cool off in the air conditioning on hot days. Oh, and the books are also amazing! The building itself is a beauty as well, almost worth checking out on its own. They have a great system for curbside pick up for books you put on hold, I appreciate them looking out for their patrons.
Super helpful staff. Great place to read the old fashioned way, in quiet surroundings. Like the nice big windows and open spaces. Very peaceful. I also get ebooks through the library system. Great service, and free to library cardholders.
Amazing place. They offer free WiFi and the space is very clean and neat. You can get books, DVD’s, audio book, magazines, e-books and do much more. They offer activities for all ages, they host book clubs, and other clubs of sorts. They have computers that you can use for free. They have an entire floor dedicated to just the children so kids can be kids in a library without anybody being bothered, as well as very nice staff they help you find everything you need and that are very polite. I love the SBPL.
Free wifi, limited power outlets. Pandemic update: After 8 months they're confused on instructions on pick up of materials. After 2 years almost back to risk free times. 2022 under construction so check online what's available...
They have a great system for curbside pick up for books you put on hold. Instructions are posted at the pick up site on Anapamu side for Central, but after a few texts someone comes out with your book, places it on a table and walks away so you can come get it. Sidewalk is also marked for social distancing.
I have enjoyed going to libraries i was a child. One visible problem with Santa Barbara library is homeless using it as a living room. Among them are those in need of psychiatric attention, and hygiene issues, and general lowering their voices when they walk into library under the influence of alcohol/ drugs.
Despite years of budget cuts this is a wonderful library system with extremely helpful staff. Books can be requested from any library in Santa Barbara County. Requests and holds are free and can be made online as can renewals. The SB Public Library also offers electronic books and many programs and services. I'd give them 10 stars if that were possible. Consider donating to the Friends so SBPL and its branches can continue its great work.
Employee did not perform up to the expected standards. I made complaint against Matt a quiet Latino staff member at Central Library for reverse discrimination for politely allowing another to repetitively hurt me.. These monitors are hired to moderate unruly patrons especially those who are not "clean and sober"...
Place is under heavy construction, and frankly I expected a lot more books.
