The Frontier Culture Museum is a great place and a must see! First thing, you can either walk the path or get a golf cart. We opted to walk it with a toddler and a stroller and ended up stopping and my husband ended up going up the path after Germany to get a golf cart so we could finish all of it. The interpreters at each location were all very knowledgeable and were able to provide much detail on each location and various activities. There are animals and my toddler loved that. She would go up to the fence and watch them. Germany was my personal favorite. The lady sitting in the Germany house was amazing and gave so much information about the times and how families would live. My husband liked new America and the two at the last houses were so knowledgeable and explained daily life in those time. This was a great place to go to and explore and your able to take your time and not feel rushed during your experience. We loved it and will be traveling back to visit.
Golf cart was $25 April '22 and felt absolutely necessary on a hot day with two toddlers. The staff were awesome. Every spot worth stopping and chatting with them. We went on a weekday and there was just a few other people there. Wool Week was pretty cool even though we were too late for a shearing. Got to see baby lambs in addition to the sheep and pigs.
This was such a fun experience. It is a lot bigger than it appears from the highway. It took 2 hours and we did it kind of quickly. They have a golf cart to rent so you don't have to walk the whole thing. At each area there is someone to tell you about that era. The fella in the American Indian display was a wealth of knowledge. I would highly recommend this.
Interesting stuff and its not your typical museum cos its outdoors so plan your visit on a sunny but cloudy day but there are golf carts if you don't want to walk around in the heat. Perfect for those who like history and culture! They have drinks at the welcome center for a dollar if you get parched. There are live characters in the exhibits who will tell you all about their stations
I believe 2 hours would be adequate but 3 would be best. I was by myself at the end of the day in April. There was a costumed person at each stop. Dedicated folks. Wish I knew about golf cart rentals. Had no idea how large and far between things were. Shuttles mentioned but never saw except some bearded guy zipping around. Very hot day. I saw most things and almost made the church. Lady watering the job pen said the bearded guy would probably give me a lift.... Not. Anyhow the lovely gentleman working the garden area was starting exit and said he would get the interpreter's golf cart to help me out. Old lady, little service dog, red face. Great clues a ride would be helpful instead of an ambulance. Anyhow, the bearded guy hollered at him. Hmmm. Hope he didn't get in trouble.
We’ve been in the area for several years without visiting, so it was nice to finally see some of the museum! What a neat concept. We visited the new world side with an individual tour guide since it’s the winter model. I appreciated that it included a ride in a golf cart, because this could be a ton of walking!! I’d like to return in the non-winter season when the people are actually out on the property. Still need to see the old world part of things too! I think during the non-tour guide model, I’ll want to rent one of the golf carts unless I’m in the mood for some good exercise.
Fantastic hands-on experience! There are exhibits from Western Africa and Europe. Many of the houses are original structures brought from overseas. The people who work here are highly informed which makes for an amazing experience! We didn’t expect this place to be so good. A lot of exhibits to visit so plan ahead. It easily takes 3 hours at the minimum. The people working here are so welcoming and friendly. We got to learn about different cultures back then. Tickets are $12 a person and kids below 6 are free. The thing that surprised us a lot is that people working here are really doing things and not pretending. For example like making cheese, bread, tailoring etc. They are doing it right there. Would definitely recommend visiting this place if you are in Staunton.
We went on a Thursday during home school days. There was a fair amount of people but each place had things to do and plenty to look at that people were able to send adequate time at each spot.
