Affecting The Mind Body And Emotions Are Key
How do you make sure everyone comes home safely after the shift? Training must be easy to learn and effective. No training will be effective if an officers Mind, Body, and Emotions are not affected. Sterile, low stress training may have its place, but all training must be progressive. By progressive we mean the ultimate goal of all training should be to provide a real world training environment. Training should be as close to the real thing, without sacrificing officer safety. All training has inherent risks involved. There is a fine line between, an over emphasis on safe training, effective training, and dangerous training. Trainers, department administrators, and supervisors should always evaluate training for a balance between safety, effectiveness, and training that will result in an unacceptable officer injury rate.
Below are some training considerations:
• Will your officers have the physical ability to perform the techniques?
• Are the techniques effective against all body types?
• Have the techniques been battle tested, and shown to be highly effective?
• Do the techniques reduce the risk of injury to both the officer and perpetrator?
• Can the system be learned, retained, and recalled under stress, in the allotted training time?
• Can the techniques be performed by officers who have a low level of physical conditioning, and lack athletic skill?
• Have the techniques been proven to allow smaller officers to subdue opponents who are more athletic, and may outweigh them by over a hundred pounds.
• Most importantly, was the defensive tactics system designed by law enforcement and military professionals?
