The Gilbertsville-Mount Upton Central School District is committed to an educational environment that assures equitable opportunity for individuals to become responsible, productive members of society. We encourage excellence and enthusiasm for learning.
Gilbertsville - Mount Upton Central School is a rural school district in Upstate New York with an enrollment of approximately 450 students in grades pre-kindergarten through twelve.
Living in a rural area does not necessarily have to mean that the school system is not equipped with the proper resources or the newest technology. We have wireless internet connectivity and mobile computer labs for students to access resources from anywhere in the school building.
GMU provides a wide array of opportunities for students. Our vision has always been to provide a high quality education to our students at a reasonable cost to our taxpayers. GMU prides itself on innovative courses, a high level of technological resources, and its knowledgeable teaching staff.
Our elementary school offers both a traditional grade configuration and multi-age classrooms. Our 6-8 middle school is team based and our High School has Regents level, AP (Advanced Placement), and college course offerings.
The hard work of our staff has resulted in some of the highest Regents diploma rates in the area, as well as successful results in many other areas of academic achievement. At GMU, most of our students graduate with a Regents Diploma (87% in 2009) and the majority of those students attend a two or four year university. Recent graduates of GMU are attending such universities as Cornell, Union, Colgate, Albany School of Pharmacy, Maryland, and Kansas State, to name a few. Those students not attending a college or university are serving in the military or going directly into the workforce.
GMU strongly believes in providing a wide range of activities for students to take part in outside of the classroom. Fine arts and extra curricular activities, as well as interscholastic sports opportunities are available to all of our students. The district produces elementary and high school musicals in the fall and drama productions in the spring. The band and chorus perform throughout the school year. Students interested in the law and debate can take part in our mock trial organization. We have many opportunities in sports including soccer, basketball, club volleyball and badminton, baseball, softball and track. During the winter, approximately 100 students each year are part of the district ski club. If students desire to be active, there are a multitude of activities for them to take advantage of throughout the school year.
