Gordon Lee Middle School is part of the Chickamauga City School System. It is a public school which serves grades 6-8. There are currently 350 students attending GLMS. The average enrollment has remained constant over the past five years. The number of female and male students is essentially the same. The majority of students are classified as white, non-Hispanic.
Gordon Lee Middle School is a city school, and therefore provides educational opportunities for all city residents. However, the majority of the student body is made up of non-city students who wish to attend Gordon Lee Middle School. All students must apply each year but only non-city students are required to pay a minimal tuition.
The school day begins at 8:00 and ends at 3:00. All students receive five hours of core instruction and have one connection class each day. Students rotate to a new connection class each semester enabling them to experience a variety of courses.
The background of the Chickamauga City School System is overflowing with historical influences. Gordon Lee High School, Gordon Lee Middle School, and Chickamauga Elementary School are all located on the same campus. The campus lies right outside the Chickamauga & Chattanooga National Military Park. This park is the oldest and largest military park in the nation. Beside the school is one of the south's most beautiful antebellum estates, the Gordon-Lee Mansion.
While many of the system's buildings were built in the early 1900's, Gordon Lee Middle School was constructed in 1991. Although the building is relatively new, the philosophy of the school is established on traditional values and high standards for students. This philosophy was put into place in the system years ago and has provided the community with a long-standing reputation for academic excellence.
