Grand Gulf State Park

Description

Grand Gulf State Park is a state-operated, privately owned and publicly accessible, geologic preserve near Thayer, Missouri, encompassing a forked canyon that is the remnant of an ancient collapsed dolomite cave system. The land that is now the park was acquired by the late conservationist Leo Drey (1917–2015) before becoming part of the Missouri state parks system. The 322acre state park has been operated by the Missouri Department of Natural Resources under a lease agreement with the L-A-D Foundation since 1984. Grand Gulf was declared a National Natural Landmark in 1971 as an excellent example of karst topography and underground stream piracy. A 60acre portion of the park was designated by the state as the Grand Gulf Natural Area in 1986.DescriptionThe Grand Gulf is nearly long and up to 130ft deep with sheer sides. An uncollapsed part of the original cavern roof spans, creating one of the largest natural bridges in Missouri. A watershed of feeds into the gulf which itself drains into a cave entrance at its eastern end. Dye traces have shown that water entering the cave in Grand Gulf emerges 1 to 4 days later at Mammoth Spring in Arkansas, 9 miles (14 km) distant.

Beautiful park with 2 easily accessible platforms for viewing. 2 different hikes 15 minutes and 40 minutes. We arrived just before dusk so we only did the shorter hike. Breathtaking views. Trails are in excellent condition and are maintained. On-site lavs and picnic table. Great place to stretch, explore and relax. Restrooms: Sturdy, well-maintained and clean. Picnic area: Clean. Picnic table and bench in good condition.
Really nice place. Trails for all skill levels. There are nice boardwalks on the red trail that almost anyone can navigate. The sink is amazing and to find out mammoth springs is fed in part by this area is amazing! Worth the visit.
Nice park to stop and stretch the legs on our trip! Easy trails that aren't too hard to hike. Primitive restrooms, lots of steps in some areas but all well kept. Worth going out of your way to see!
My granddaughters and i had a great time here. And yes it looks like a mini grams canyon. There are trails to walk and see the wilderness and beauty while you are there.. Loved it and will go back again... Restrooms: Nice and clean
Cool trails and neat to read how it all formed. Huge cliffs and perfect amount of hiking before lunch. No playground or other features, just trails, picnic tables, sights, cliffs, signage about the park and restrooms. Not really "kid friendly" unless they are into hiking.
I'm glad we saw it in the summer when it was dry so we could really understand the geography but I am guessing it is so much more beautiful in the spring when the waterfall is flowing and the gorge is sucking water into the cave at the bottom Restrooms: Very clean Picnic area: Basic
We really enjoyed visiting this lovely place. Be sure to read all the information posted to better appreciate the history surrounding this location. The longer trail was a bit underwhelming, but good for steps. You don't see much of the canyon itself. If going this route I definitely recommend bug spray even if you don't stray from the path. The shorter trail left does have some wonderful views. This trail is a bit easier to navigate as it's maintained a bit more, but be prepared to use steps. Bathrooms are located on premises.
This is a pretty cool place to visit. However, the pictures on google mislead what the place actually looks like. You can not get down in the canyon, unless you got off trail. And it highly suggest that you don't go off trail, so that was disappointing. Overall, it's a pretty cool 45 minute-ish walk in the woods.
Nice short walking trails. Beautiful colors in the fall time. Unexpected canyon and natural Bridge that's hard to see unless you walk to the end of the platform on the right side of the parking.
Beautiful area. Will go back when it cools of a little!
