We were extremely pleased with our stay at the hotel. Rooms very clean, quiet, and staff were very good. We loved the access to Lake Superior right out front. Kids enjoyed the rocks and wading in the lake. Pool was enjoyed by us and the kids used the game room a bit as well as the exercise facility. We almost didn't book because I saw it as a 2 rated hotel, but very glad we did. I gave it a 5.
We paid $10 to Park in their lot. Even though a sign informed of NO overnight parking...we paid at a close campground office, got the permit. Then went inside & had Tap Beer. & Fresh herring dinner plates. We are happy campers on 8-26-23 Food & drinks: Yeah the full service bar is nice. We are allowed to smoke em if you got em. So lit em up just like the locals.
It's what I would expect for a casino lodge. Their restaurant needs more attention. There's nothing else in the area, so this is the only option for food if you don't want to drive 30 minutes to Grand Marais. The fridge in the room is also way to tiny to keep anything you purchase at the trading post across the street Our water bottles didn't even fit. At their restaurant, we waited in a line of only 7 people With no one in the restaurant and staff ignoring everyone for 15 minutes before we decided to take the drive. We got back after about 2 hours total and people who were waiting in front of us were just leaving the dining area.
Honestly it would be a 1 star rating if it wasn't for the view. We were given the wrong room and weren't allowed to get the room we reserved. The room didn't even have a microwave. We asked that they at least accommodate us or give us something for not giving us our suite. They said your still on the lake side, so stop complaining. The front desk girl was not helpful at all and was barely ever at her desk when we repeatedly couldn't get into our room. Just wasn't a very professional staff outside of security. The stay didn't feel very welcoming. Also the restaurant had so many flies while we were eating it was ridiculous. And they always closed at 8pm, so when you were done hiking for the day, you couldn't get food.
Overall this place is pretty good. When we arrived we checked in and told us our reservations was canceled. We made reservations and had to change to a different date so we canceled the first one and rebooked it. We got an email saying our reservations was confirmed. We requested the view of Lake Superior and it was for only one night. Well someone canceled our reservations and it was very upsetting. The staff did everything to make it right. We did not get the room with a view but got 50% off our room and $30 off st the restaurant. We were blessed to still get a room because we drove all the way from Minneapolis to see Lake Superior, the falls and Grand Portage National Historic park. The rooms are nice but poor lighting.
This is a great place to stay for catching the ferry to Isle Royale. Good place for the cost. It does have a nice view. We were hesitant to stay here seeing some people found panties in their room. However we only found a used men’s sock in our room so we were grateful.Rooms: 4/5
Booked this "beautiful" hotel for 2 nights. Arriving on the day of check-in to Grand Marais and this is at least 6 hours drive from home, they call me from the “hotel” and say that an error has occurred in the system and they cannot provide me with a room, since there are no more places ... .. What should I do? I was offered to rent a hotel somewhere nearby at my own expense, but there are no places anywhere. I am with two small children: 7 years and 8 months. At 5 pm I had to go home. Never do business with these scumbags.
Hotel reservations took a long time and then when we were checking out they had the wrong price on our room. Beautiful rooms, location and their restaurant was nice also. Just need to fix the reservations desk better and have it on computerRooms: 5/5
This is the worst run place I have ever stayed at! Could not check into our room, along with a line of people behind us because our rooms were not clean at 6pm, check in is at 4pm. They kept telling us our room will be ready in 10 min.! We finally talked the front desk to let us up to our room even though it was still wasn't cleaned. Got in the room and we apologized to housekeeping for showing up. She was a janitor that normally doesn't even clean rooms. Said the room was finished and she was waiting for towels. After the towels never showed up, went to the front desk for towels, because our phone in the room didn't work. We're assured that well would send some up. Needless to say we never did get towels so we couldn't take showers in the morning. Went to front desk to check out, asked for a discount for many reasons, the front desk documented our concerns and did not charge us. We were supposed to get a phone call to voice our concerns and never recieved one. Tried calling multiple times only for the phone to go unanwered. Then a day later they charged us full price for the room. There were a couple of nice people but the majority of workers were rude and seem to be disgruntled. Pretty bad when the girl at the front desk tells us she's quitting this week because of how they treat there employees. The room itself was ok, but the management running it was horrible. To not even address our issues of no phone, no towels, check in 2 hours late! I'm not a picky person but come on...really...can't even take a shower!!!! Do yourself a favor and stay away from this place!!!!!!!
People who complain about this place are just picky. If you are coming to this hotel, you are coming here for a reason: you are passing through to go somewhere else. This is NOT a destination hotel, but if you are staying here to drive to/from Canada or to go visit Isle Royale National park like I did then you don't have many other choices around the Grand Portage area to stay. This place is not perfect, but it's a good hotel for a night or two. My only complaint is the ridiculous amount of flies in the restaurant and in my room. Get some bug lights, please. Noteworthy details: Perfect for those going out to Isle Royale National Park by boat
