A former elementary school 70 miles from Portland, Oregon, Great Vow Zen Monastery was purchased by Zen Community of Oregon in 2002. It rests on 20 acres of land with meadows, woods, and a small stream.
Our Zen Buddhist practice is a synthesis of Soto and Rinzai Zen traditions informed by the practice and study of our teachers, Chozen and Hogen Bays. At the heart of our training are monthly silent meditation retreats ranging from 6-10 days called sesshin. We also offer a variety of workshops and classes ranging from contemplative arts to compassionate communication with the intention to broaden our expression of wisdom in everyday life. We hope that Great Vow can be a spiritual refuge and a vehicle to carry the life of the Dharma forward for many generations to come.
Great Vow is a residential, Zen Buddhist, training monastery inspired and guided by Jizo Bodhisattva’s vow to help all beings who suffer, no matter where they are found. The monastery's aspiration is to maintain authentic, whole-hearted practice while keeping the teachings open and accessible to anyone with a sincere desire to practice the Buddha-way.
At the monastery we make and distribute meditation and practice supplies, statuary, and books through our store called ZenWorks. Please visit zenworks.org for details.
