Green Schools Nova Scotia is a free environmental education program from Efficiency Nova Scotia. We support our community by teaching smart energy habits and enhancing sustainability in schools, all for the good of our precious planet.
Energy conservation, composting, recycling, reusing: awesome things are happening in Nova Scotia’s schools to foster a culture of environmental sustainability. Green Schools builds on this momentum, working with the whole school—students, staff, parents, and community members—to strengthen positive efforts already underway and help establish new leadership in schools that are ready to go green.
As an Efficiency Nova Scotia initiative, Green Schools engages schools in environmental action while reducing energy and resource use. We envision schools where students walk, cycle or carpool to class and idle-free zones rule the schoolyard. We imagine cafeterias where composting and litterless lunches are habits not rules. We strive to cultivate schools that are noticed for their beautiful grounds, for the food they grow (and eat!) on the premises, and for how they work together on projects that truly have the power to change our world. Most importantly, we aspire to make every school in Nova Scotia a greener place to learn, work, and play.
Before we know it, using resources efficiently and thinking carefully about our environmental footprint will not be choices—they will be necessities. Our aim is to equip young people with the knowledge and tools they need to steward a changing world, ultimately inspiring the next generation to become champions of sustainability.
