Greenwood Gardens

About

A jewel in the Garden State--a 28 acre garden with majestic trees, meadows, ponds, and cultivated woodlands surrounded by 2,100 acres of preserved parkland. Open May 3, 2018 - November, 2018.

Description

Greenwood Gardens’ mission is to connect people with nature in an historic garden oasis. Our vision is a world that embraces the beauty and transformative power of nature, and celebrates the history of place.

The Garden Conservancy has endorsed Greenwood Gardens as one of 16 exceptional gardens.

Greenwood Gardens was originally the home of the Joseph P. Day family The buildings and landscape were designed by William W. Renwick and constructed by hand of rough local stone and colorful Arts & Crafts tiles. The Days sold the property in 1944 and it declined. In the 1950s Peter P. Blanchard, Jr. and his wife Adelaide Childs Frick purchased the property and added their own signature to the Gardens. In particular, they added many evergreen trees, shrubs, and new design elements. The allées at the entrance and near the ponds are examples.

In 2000, in keeping with his father's wishes, Peter P. Blanchard III, and his wife, Sofia Blanchard, began the process of establishing Greenwood gardens as a nonprofit public garden and conservation organization.

Beautiful garden with many unique landscapes and statues. Went on a rainy day but for our luck the sun came out. Not crowded at all. Volunteer staff is local and they are very helpful. Posing photography is prohibited only if you are using it for commercial purposes. I had my Canon RP with a macro lens and it was a blast that setup does not look professional enough for some reason lol but I asked at the gate if I could use it as a courtesy to their policy. They have done amazing in maintaining it. Would support them for their commitment to keep the place clean and enjoyable for everyone! Will visit again! Again read their policy and be nice to everyone.
Had a great time here with my friends. It is a beautiful place to just enjoy nature and spend some nice quality time. It is very well taken care of and the staff are super nice and polite. I will definitely visit again!
Beautiful gardens on a manageable 28 acre property. While the tour is self guided the staff is very knowledgeable and incredibly friendly, and very happy to share some of the property’s history. A nice bonus was the cold iced tea served at the end of the tour!

Very beautiful gardens! Great place ti relax and enjoy the scenery. A little pricey at $15 per person unfortunately.
This was our first time and the weather was nice. The staff was very helpful and knowledgeable. It was beautiful and relaxing. My granddaughter was quite the photographer for a 3yr old.
Beautiful place, worth to visit once but that's about it. They need to update their "please refrain from section" as apparently sitting and sketching is only allowed about 4 days a year if I recall correctly, and I showed up in the wrong day staff was nice about it and asked me to stop, will not be coming back. But nice place though if you wanna waste $15.
Beautiful garden very clean and gorgeous interior. We went on Mother’s Day it wasn’t that packed, the weather cooperated so we enjoyed. But one staff was really unprofessional and rude towards me and my friend. We both knew about the rules and regulations prior to visiting as we read the website beforehand, I’m not sure why she approached us saying no flash /professional photography , posed photography even though we only were taking pictures with our phones. She also told us not to take pictures around people etc where’s we were clearly avoiding people and was around quieter areas. It just ruined the experience for us overall, kinda sad on how beautiful the place was we had weird experience with this one particular staff. It’s almost as if she just said that for no reason? We genuinely felt uncomfortable and discriminated. Sooo many people were taking pictures dressed up and even one person with a PROFESSIONAL CAMERA??! And no one said anything. Other staff members were very nice and kind.
Majestic gardens kept by master gardeners, leading down to a stone tower overlooking a glade and lakes inhabited by geese and bullfrogs. Like palatial ruins from the pages of a storybook, the stoney paths feel otherworldly. Fortunately, strutting turkeys are there to break their mesmerizing spell with ear piercing gobbling.
Incredibly beautiful gardens and the nicest people working there.
