Grocers On Wheels is a program of Community Nutrition Partnership, a 501(c)(3) nonprofit South East Raleigh Vicinity Emerging (S.E.R.V.E)
Grocers on Wheels is a mobile market providing access to food primarily in Southeast Raleigh, Wake and Durham Counties in the areas considered food deserts. We visit properties, businesses, organizations, senior communities, etcetera by invite and set appointment by property managers/home owners only.
Our mission is to provide affordable, accessible, fresh foods and healthy baked goods to low-income areas and we are doing this every week with delivery of fresh local foods, obtained directly from NC farmers and others, to low-income citizens experiencing food insecurities. Diabetic friendly ingredients are used in our baked goods upon request (i.e. Stevia, Agava, Splenda sugar alternatives.)
We accept mobile EBT/SNAP food stamps, debit cards, credit cards and cash.
Grocers On Wheels also provides nutritional education through non-traditional theatrical performances on site and in collaboration from venues.

The legacy of Grocers On Wheels was started by Mr. Zelb Hunter was born 1921 in Clayton, Johnston County North Carolina. As a young man he watched his father farm the land and begin to work in the tobacco fields. As he became an adult Mr. Hunter decided to grow a garden on his own and began to sell the produce he harvested in the city of Raleigh.
When WWII begin in 1940, Zelb Hunter put down farming and served four years over in North Africa, European (Normandy, France D Day), and the South Pacific Tour. Mr. Hunter served in the US Army for three tours from 1941-1945 and was was awarded four Bronze Stars for being under fire and an Arrowhead. His war stories were archived by Campbell University for the Library of Congress/Veteran's Day Project. On June 23, 1948 Zelb Hunter married Penny Powell and they started sharecropping until they both became employed with the State of North Carolina.
Mr. Hunter was an entrepreneur from the heart and he continued to sell produce off and on throughout his career. He never let go of the very thing he learned as a young man. In 1980, Mr. Hunter decided after retirement he would run the mobile produce service full-time with his wife Mrs. Penny Hunter. Mr. Hunter went throughout the housing projects of southeast Raleigh and served low income citzens and seniors.
As the legacy continues Mr. Zelb Hunter's son Demetrius Hunter began to work with his father in 1999 and develop great customer service skills, picking the best produce off the truck, and working with one-on-one with patrons regularly. His father's always suggested bagging the elderly groceries and walking them to the door. Mr. Zelb Hunter retired in 2008 shortly after Mrs. Penny Hunter passed away.
Now the legacy continues through Mr. Zelb Hunter's son Demetrius Hunter and he was given his father's blessings on November 1, 2013 to continue providing fresh produce to the community as he taught him. Demetrius Hunter proudly resides in Southeast Raleigh and is also the founder of SERVE 21st century community outreach project and Raindownus.org, its umbrella/sister project, that addresses health disparities in non-tradtion ways.
