Grunauer Kansas City

About

Classic Austrian Cuisine in the heart of the crossroads.

Description

Nicholas and Peter Grünauer, along with long-time friend and Viennese restauranteur Klaus Piber, have collaborated in order to open a namesake Viennese Gasthaus in the historic Freight House. The restaurant is the second iteration of the family's popular and long-lived restaurant of the same name in Vienna’s artsy Neubau neighborhood, and they hope to bring much of the same inspired Austrian cooking, hospitality and atmosphere to downtown Kansas City.

Great atmosphere for a nice date out. Food had a nice presentation and was pretty good but most of what we ordered we didn't find amazing. I do recommend getting the cabbage, plus get a side of fresh horseradish with your entree. The bread bowl wasn't worth it for me. I found our server rude and unfriendly, but the hostess staff was wonderful. Parking can get a little tight and limited depending what time it is.
A fine dining experience with intriguing German cuisine perfect for date night or ladies night out. The ambiance is one of quiet candlelight. The service is excellent - with posh, knowledgeable wait staff like you see in the movies. And the food? Both exotic and comforting at the same time. Make reservations as far in advance as you can!
Great way to celebrate our anniversary. Helpful staff, ready with suggestions and pairings. He was also very knowledgeable about the menus. My husband had no problem finding something gluten-free to eat. When the food arrived, it looked incredible, and i couldn't want to dig in.Food: 5/5
Very generous portions. Food is somewhat simple, but that's what you would expect from Germanic dishes. It tasted similar to what I ate when I was over there. The server was good and explained the menu well. The interior is very interesting as well. Parking is very good.Food: 5/5
The food was beautiful and the waiter was incredibly willing to help explain the menu options including the pronunciations! There’s a dedicated menu for gluten free items and the receipt even comes with a postcard souvenir. I also think the price was quite generous giving the quality and quantity of the food. I’d definitely recommend this place to friends. It was just a little hard to hear from all the lively conversations!
Had such a great time this afternoon at the bar. Tried three apps two were excellent, one was ok. Chris was a great professional with great recommendations. Very knowledgeable of the menu and mad me feel super welcome. The pate and sausages were excellent. The salmon appetizer needed something. A little more acid would have put it over the top. That is the only thing I wouldn't order again.
I've been for dinner and happy hour but after a positively delicious lunch, it was time to give this place 5 stars. They just started doing a 2 course prix fixe for lunch for $17! But of course I wanted something not on the lunch menu. The smoked salmon in buckwheat crêpe was excellent. The goulash which IS on the lunch menu is divine. 2 great salads. And a basket of 4 kinds of rolls with butter and quark cheese. Sooooo happy
This is the best German/Austrian restaurant I’ve been to in the US. Rare to find this kind of food done well with great ingredients and authentic flavors. I grew up with German cooking at home and have lived in Germany. It’s the kind of well-made, ingredient-focused elevated Germanic comfort food that is even difficult to find in Gasthäuser in Germany/Austria nowadays. Tried the mushroom Gulasch, Schnitzel, and salad assortment, all of which I can highly recommend. They use the special green pumpkin seed oil from the Styrian region of Austria in their dressings. The portions are generous so come hungry or bring friends who eat a lot. This is an absolute must if in the KC area and if you’re a fan of Germanic food it wouldn’t be remiss to plan a special trip to KC just to go here. Großes Kompliment an die Küche! Vegetarian options: There are vegetarian dishes like mushroom Gulasch on the menu
My wife should be writing this review, as she’s forgotten more about Austrian and German cuisine than I’m ever going to know. But from my amateur perspective, the food here is great. I had the Schweinsbraten Mit Knödel and fear not, the servers are super helpful with pronunciations. It didn’t look like a ton of food, but I barely made it halfway through before I was completely full. For dessert we split an Apfelstrudel. The apples could have been a little more tart or maybe add some lemon for sourness, but the whipped cream was literally the best I’ve ever had. The atmosphere is pleasant and not too noisy. Service was excellent. My sole regret was our timing. We dined here on a hot summer day, and the rich, dense food would probably have been better suited to a chilly evening in fall. But hey, that just gives us an excuse to come back.
Wow! Drink menu and beer are great. Food was amazing. I highly recommend getting the red cabbage as a side. No complaints at all. Get a reservation, or sit in the bar area. Either way, you’ll have a great experience.Food: 5/5
