GAP provides affordable legal services to parents/caretakers who seek legal guardianship of their cognitively impaired child attaining adulthood.
Guardianship Assistance Program (GAP) is a non-profit organization that provides legal representation for parents and caretakers of developmentally disabled youth that need to petition the Court for legal guardianship of their child. This process is complex and financially prohibitive for many families. The mission of GAP is to provide legal services for these families at a reduced or no charge.
GAP was formed by attorneys with a vision to assist parents in protecting their children through adulthood. In New Jersey a parent does not automatically retain any rights as guardian when their child reaches age 18. Many families seek legal guardianship to have peace of mind that their child is protected. GAP fills this need by providing affordable legal representation by attorneys experienced in this field.
Currently, the only options available to parents seeking Guardianship is to: hire private counsel which is often cost prohibitive; seek assistance from other organizations that assist in the paperwork but do not provide legal representation or file with the Bureau of guardianship services which has a backlog of approximately 4000 cases.
Guardian Assistance Program can begin helping you when your child turns 16 years old, although the process isn’t effective until the child is 18 years old. Our expert attorneys and staff will walk you through the entire guardianship process from start to finish. From ensuring the proper paperwork is competed to staying by your side in the New Jersey court room, GAP is here for you.
Whether you are the parent or legal caretaker, call 609-444-6653 to ensure your child is properly cared for once they turn 18 years old. GAP is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit registered charity.
