Description

Gulf Islands National Seashore is a place of myriad riches-- blue-green, sparkling waters, magnificent white beaches, and fertile coastal marshes. Its 12 areas include historic forts, shaded picnic areas, bayou and coastal view trails, campgrounds and island wilderness areas. From Cat Island, Mississippi, it stretches eastward 160 miles to the Okaloosa Area east of Fort Walton Beach, Florida.

Mission

Congress established Gulf Islands National Seashore in 1971, to protect barrier islands, wildlife, salt marshes, historic structures and archeological sites along the Gulf of Mexico, and to provide recreational opportunities.

The long, narrow islands are composed of white sand carried seaward by rivers draining from the Appalachian Mountains. During violent storms the islands function as barriers, blocking ocean waves that would otherwise stride the mainland with greater force.

As a unit in the National Park System, Gulf Islands National Seashore preserves unimpaired the natural and cultural resources and values of the national park system for the enjoyment, education, and inspiration of this and future generations. The Park Service cooperates with partners to extend the benefits of natural and cultural resource conservation and outdoor recreation throughout this country and the world.
