Halifax Public Libraries

Description

Halifax Public Libraries is a Canadian public library system serving residents of Halifax, Nova Scotia. It is the largest public library system in Nova Scotia, with over 2.8 million visits to library branches and 172,520 active registered borrowers or 44% of the municipality's population. With roots that trace back to the establishment of the Citizens' Free Library in 1864, the current library system was created in 1996 during municipal amalgamation, and now consists of 14 branches and a collection of almost 1 million items.HistoryEarly HistoryHalifax Mechanics' Institute was one of a series of Mechanics' Institutes that were set up around the world after becoming popular in Britain. It housed a subscription library that allowed members who paid a fee to borrow books. The Mechanic's Institutes libraries eventually became public libraries when the establishment of free libraries occurred. One of the members of the Mechanics' Institute about 1835 was Samuel Cunard. In 1864, the Honourable William Young purchased the heavily indebted Halifax Mechanic’s Library and donated the collection to establish the city’s first free public library, The Citizens’ Free Library. Anyone “above the age of 18 who were of a known and respectable nature” could borrow one book at a time. The library found a permanent home in 1890 on the second floor of City Hall, where the office of the Mayor of Halifax is now located. Some talks about a new municipally-funded library in 1901 were unsuccessful.Creation of municipal LibrariesIn 1948, Halifax had “a single over-crowded, under-equipped room at the end of a corridor” located in the City Hall building. The conditions and poor services of the Citizens' Free Library room even failed in comparison to much smaller towns in Nova Scotia, such as Amherst.

Beautifully designed building with 5 levels to explore, where I spend all my work from home days. The air conditioner and Wi-Fi, also the quiet setting, definitely makes it a great place for work and study in the hot summer.
Beautifully designed building! Centrally located with bright spaces for reading, studying, or planning your next activity. Frequently has free educational events scheduled that are open to the public. The top floor has a nice café, a small rooftop patio space, and a reading room with great views. Worth visiting!
Beautiful new library with tons of spots to sit/study/read. It looks like there are tons of media materials/computers too, not just books. There's even a rooftop terrace! If I lived in Halifax I'd be here every day.
What a beautiful place. Staff, layout, technology, café, seating, reading material, and overall design. Bless the generosity, creativity and execution of those that made it possible to benefit all from cradle to grave. A must visit place for anyone interested in the culture and society of Halifax. A view over the green roof top accompanies this observation.
It is one of the special modern structural in Nova Scotia, species, elegant decoration, cozy. I feel relaxed , and has lots of variety of book. I used to spent hours in this location. If you plan to visit Nova Scotia, dont miss to spend some time in this location
Beautiful library with five full levels to explore. Located centrally in downtown Halifax and accessible by many bus routes. Due to Covid, there are more safety protocols in place such as no food or beverages and having to wear a mask the whole time. However, it is still a wonderful place to visit just to see the architecture and be engrossed in the scent and sight of books of every kind. Head on up to the fifth floor reading area to people watch the passerby’s on Spring Garden Road and take in a great view of the city.
Its a heaven were we can get a peace of mind to read books. Not for elders for kids also it's a awesome place to make them engaged for few hours. I personally like the place very much... thanks to the halifax govt
Lovely inviting environment, their goal is to bring the city together. Their website has a calendar which showcases their many events such as puppet shows, tech aid for seniors and breakdancing classes. They bring in so many walks of life and invite them to connect. The ampersand cafe is a wee bit pricey, but I love that you are allowed to eat in the library. The book collection is huge, and the staff are very friendly. Absolutely a wonderful and welcoming spot to spend an afternoon.
A was a very good experience. Knowledge, friendly, and helpful staff. Very thoughtfully laid out plan. Lots of computers to use, all covid19 friendly placements. The DIY section is open to the public on the 1st of March 2022.
Wow! What an amazing public space. The unique architecture is a sight to see on the outside but step inside and it's even more amazing. Bright light from windows everywhere! And there's no getting lost. Signposts are everywhere to guide you to your favourite book, genre or snack! I'm jealous!
