Hampton Park

Description

Hampton Park is a public park located in peninsular Charleston, South Carolina, USA. At 60acre, it is the largest park on the peninsula. It is bordered by The Citadel to the west, Hampton Park Terrace to the south, North Central to the east, and Wagener Terrace to the north. The park is named in honor of Confederate General Wade Hampton III who, at the time of the Civil War, owned one of the largest collections of slaves in the South. After the Civil War, Hampton became a proponent of the Lost Cause movement, member of the Red Shirts and governor of South Carolina.HistoryColonial EraThe land constituting current-day Hampton Park was, by 1769, part of a plantation owned by John Gibbes and known as The Grove or Orange Grove Plantation.Race CourseIn 1835, part of Gibbes' plantation was acquired by the South Carolina Jockey Club, a group that developed the Washington Race Course on the site. An annual horse race in February attracted thousands of spectators who could watch the races from an Italianate grandstand designed by Charles F. Reichardt. Today, Mary Murray Drive is a one-mile (1.6 km) parkway that circles Hampton Park in almost the exact location of the race track.

Its a beautiful and clean park to just sit and relax, or go on a walk/run. Free parking as well. There were lime bikes you could rent, but we felt it was costly for 45 cents per minute. Lot of geese in the area. Felt like it was a safe place to be in, but we did see a couple of homeless people. There was also a wedding going on. Restrooms: Didnt see any, but not sure. Dog-friendliness: Yes but need to be on a leash Picnic area: Yes plenty of spots
A wonderful and quaint park with a wide area to spread out. There is a large water feature with a cute bridge for pictures and strolls. There are opportunities to rent areas for special occasions. Revolving artworks and festivals take place here. If you have a chance to visit, I highly recommend it!
A beautiful park with a great walking trails. Lots of mature oak trees and lots of great places to rest in the shade. Dogs are allowed but must remained leashed. A pond with ducks and geese. There are many paths for bike riding. Highly recommend visiting if your in the Charleston area. Playground: There is a children's play area at the main entrance. Restrooms: Port-a-potty found near pond. Dog-friendliness: Dogs welcome but must remained leashed. Picnic area: Lots of picnic tables and lawns to sit.
Lots of spiderwebs! Be careful walking under the trees. Otherwise, this park is gorgeous! The fountain, birds, water, and flower bed are lovely. There are many picnic benches to use.
Love this park. There is always something in bloom. Easy to find parking , there are two large parking areas. The park is free. Close to downtown. It is absolutely gorgeous during spring when azaleas are in bloom. It is pretty when Camelias are in bloom. The gazebo area is very nice too. There is a large pond, fountain in the middle section. It's an nice walk around the perimeter with some exercise equipment along the way. Dogs have to be leashed. The park looks well maintained and is nice to visit any time of the year.
Beautiful park with a lovely collection of flora. Nice spot for an early summer stroll with a good amount of shade.
Pretty park to stroll around. Has a variety of nice flowers, rose bushes, crepe myrtles and live oaks. Nice fountain and ponds with a bridge. The downside is all of the poop from the Canada Geese.
Visiting from KY, we really enjoyed the park, all the flowers and all the geocaching nearby. Lots of people here, we felt safe until several men started yelling at us "white people, you better run" There were several I guess homeless people sleeping around some of the areas we wanted see, but didn't want to bother them.. would love to go back and see more another trip..
First time going and I just randomly decided to walk to the park with my girlfriend on her birthday and came across a pink Floyd dark side of the moon concert that was playing on the waterfront absolutely awesome performance will definitely go back to the park event or not it's an amazingly beautiful park
Beautiful park with great walking paths. Things were blooming even in December. Rest rooms available near the green houses. The bridge is a bit steep, but lovely. Lots of dog walkers and meanderers. And geocaching!
