Washington Square (Charleston)

Description

Washington Square is a greenspace in downtown Charleston, South Carolina. It is located behind city hall at the corner of Meeting Street and Broad Street in the Charleston Historic District. It was known as City Hall Park until October 10, 1881, when it was renamed in honor of George Washington. The new name was painted over the gates in December 1881.The location of Washington Square once was the site of Corbett's Thatched Tavern. The city square was opened in 1818.Along the east wall of the park is a monument to Gen. Pierre Beauregard, the Confederate general in charge of the city's defenses in 1862-1864. In 2004, the monument had repair work performed to correct a lean that had developed. In May 1901, a bust of Henry Timrod was unveiled in the park.In the center of the park is a memorial to the Washington Light Infantry. The memorial is made of Carolina gray granite and is a miniature version of the Washington Monument in Washington, D.C. The memorial is about forty-two feet high and is inscribed with the names of important military battles. It was unveiled on February 23, 1891.A statue of William Pitt the Elder was once located in Washington Park. The statue suffered repeated damage, including a decapitation from a falling tree branch in November 1938, before being moved to the County Courthouse. A statue of George Washington was later installed on the base of the Pitt statue following some local controversy. Plans for the new work began in 1992. The Washington statue was going to be a twice-life-size sculpture by Felix de Weldon. Eventually, Jon Michel was chosen instead. The work, which cost $165,000, was unveiled on December 14, 1999.

Nice park, some interesting Historical Facts. The park was clean and offered benches and shade. Shops and Places to eat nearby.
Great park located in downtown Charleston off of Broad street. While it is a smaller park setting it offers a nice respite in the historic urban setting. If you are looking to sit and relax, gather your thoughts or just sit in the shade for a but this is a great place to go.
Really nice park, very clean and maintained, there are often tours around there and they have a guide, you can always learn something new. It’s in a close proximity to a bus station and lime electric bicycles. A nice place to relax for a bit.
Very cool! First Public Park in Charleston. Also has a time capsule that will be opened in 2061.
So, so proud of the turn out for the abortion rights rally 2021!! --and what better places to start Washington Park and to end Customs House than these gorgeous historical locales! Perfect!!!
Nice little historical park to stop & rest during your walking tour. We heard it used to be the town square back when George Washington walked these streets. My kids said they hope to return in 2061 for the time capsule opening.
Very beautiful park right next to the water for an even better experience they have what's called a water taxi that charges you 12 dollars to take u to the little island about a 1/2 mile to a whole mile out from the shore line very intriguing place to visit and explore
It is a great place to take a rest off the busy street. Many benches and places to relax.
Beautifully landscaped, tree lined urban park. Blooming plants and colorful flowers line brick laid walkway through monuments and other historical markers. Plenty of benches for sitting and enjoying the tranquil feel of nature in the busy life of the city.
Took a walking ghost tour through the city. We started in Washington Park and meandered around the city streets heating tales of the Prision, E.A. Poe, and many more. Great city.
