So what is Cyclocross?
It's a type of off-road bicycle race that combines the speed and spectacle of Tour de France style road racing with the rigorous skills of Olympic mountain bike racing. The most distinctive characteristic of the sport are the man-made hurdles and natural obstacles that require the riders to periodically dismount and run with their bikes before jumping back on at a full run. The courses are primarily off-road, relatively short and easy to view. Courses are often designed to double-back on themselves so that spectators can watch various parts of each lap from a singe vantage point.
Domestically, cyclocross may be the fastest-growing participant sport in America with annual growth in excess of 20% annually during the past 8-10 years. The 2007 U.S. National Championships drew 2,045 entries. The country’s top elite riders are now full-time sponsored professionals; and U.S. competition has now reached the point were Europe’s top racers are starting to come to the United States. In 2007, German National Champion Malte Urban, Danish National Champion Joachim Parbo and World Professional Champion Erwin Vervecken (Belgium) all competed, and lost, in the United States.
