City of Haverhill Historical Commission
Mission
The Haverhill Historic Commission was established January 8, 2003, with the following mission:
• Be the voice on historic preservation for the city
• Work cooperatively with public and private agencies to advance preservation
• Advise on historic preservation matters, including recommendations to the Mayor, City Council, and the Massachusetts Historical Commission
• Encourage and sponsor educational activities to broaden public awareness of the historical heritage of Haverhill
• Encourage and monitor individual local historic districts and work cooperatively with them
• Act as a clearing house for preservation information and maintain an inventory of the City’s historic assets
Preservation Planning
The primary responsibility of the HHC is community-wide historic preservation planning, which consists of three steps:
A. Identification
B. Evaluation
C. Protection (advise on demolition plans, public education, and advocacy to protect historic resources)
