HealthMPowers’ mission is to promote healthy behaviors and environments by empowering students, school staff, and families to improve health and academic achievement.
HealthMPowers is a designated 501 (c) (3) non-profit organization working to improve the health status and environment for students in grades PreK-8. The organization was founded in 1999 and incorporated in 2000 with a goal of targeting schools across Georgia by the end of the decade.
HealthMPowers is a comprehensive school health intervention program exemplifying the key strategies that the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has outlined for improving health, physical activity and healthy eating in schools. In collaboration with its sponsors, CDC, Emory School of Public Health, Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta, Piedmont Healthcare, Northside Hospital, and Isakson-Barnhart, HealthMPowers has created a model that not only targets youth, but also addresses the major support networks in a child’s life -- school staff and family members.
“HealthMPowers is a unique, coordinated initiative designed to increase health knowledge and promote health-enhancing behaviors among youth by providing state-of-the-art programming in the school setting”
The HealthMPowers’ program is designed to provide students, school staff, and families with information, skills, resources, and motivation necessary to take responsibility for their own health. Health education programs and training are presented in a memorable and interactive way helping each individual build a foundation for making responsible healthy decisions throughout the course of his or her life.
HealthMPowers strongly believes that the adults in a child’s life must be healthy and willing to commit to health behavior change to serve as role models for children. Therefore, HealthMPowers provides wellness programs for staff and families. Research has shown that educators/adults involved in their own personal health and well-being, teach more concepts of health and physical education.
The HealthMPowers program was founded on the premise that each school environment is unique and the continuous improvement programming must be flexible and tailored to the individual schools’ needs. Therefore, our program is not only comprehensive; it is adaptable for many different environments seen in elementary and middle schools today. HealthMPowers works with school teams bringing together the major decision makers in the school to assess current programs, policies, and environmental supports.
To build a healthy physical future for our children and a healthy fiscal future for our state, the time to invest in school health is now.
