Featuring artwork, poetry, and and other literary content. Denis Burkett is the Unknown Artist of Heartside. I have many stories to tell. The most interesting stories are true. I became a serious artist in 2010. Finding What I'd been nmissing since I traded in my art intersts to pursue an Education. I did continue to write, however. In 20010 I became disabled, since I have found that even though I stopped doing Creative art work at about the age of 14 years. , I was doing commercial posters and stuff for an advertising agency where I worked. really never considered myself an actual artist! I was a marketing major in college. I have never taken any art classes. But since I was a victim of a serious vioient crime I had many challenges looming over me.. But somehow God intervened and restored my creative spirit. So with too much time on my hands I began to get busy and create was introduced to the Heartside Studio. There I began a journey that has reawakened the writer in me and also the Art talent that had been under the surface all along. The last poem I had written was a piece for my sister who was a giffted artist and was killed in her first Year a Ferris Ste University on her way to work: in 1996 She was only eighteen years old. I read that poem at her funeral. Afterward I had writer's block for almost 15 years intil one day a walked into the Heartside Studio.
At Heartside I restarted writing again something spritual happened to me that day and about a year later started doing pastels, drawings and Painting. I had Joined Hearside Writers Group and began writing for "The Spoon" a bimonthly circular in the Heartside aand downtown Business area. In 2012 we were given the primary responsibilty with the Heartside Writers group for continuing the Spoon.
I had been delivering writing for and delivering the Spoon for a few years. When the founder of the Spoon turned over all the responsibilities over to us at the Heartside Writer's Group.
We found Funding through a generous Heartside District busness owner. The owner of Clark Communications has funded "The Spoon: A Collection of Heatside Writings" for the past three Years. I am thankful for all the volunteers and those who have helped us achieve our creative pursuits at the Hearside Studio and Art Gallery. Heartside Ministries Located at %4 S. Division in Grand Rapids is the catlyst for many who have become disabled and Homeless here in the City of Grand Rapids.
