Founded in 1964 as a four county cooperative effort, High Plains Mental Health Center has grown to become Northwest Kansas’ premier provider of mental health and substance use services. High Plains quickly grew into the twenty county agency that it is today with its headquarters in Hays and full-time offices in Goodland, Colby, Norton, Phillipsburg, and Osborne.
High Plains opened in 1964 with a total budget of a little over $32,000. The Center rented four offices and a lobby from Hadley Regional Medical Center for $100 per month and employed a grand total of three full-time employees. By 1970 the Center had expanded to all twenty current counties, supported a staff of thirty-six, and required a budget of roughly $550,000. Today, the Hadley building is no longer a hospital, and the offices at Hadley 4-North are no longer part of the Center, but since 1977 High Plains Mental Health Center has occupied the three story building across the street at 208 East 7th Street.
High Plains grew substantially throughout the 1980s and 90s, and while much of the Mental Health Reform funding that contributed to this growth was cut in the mid-2000s, the Center remains at the forefront of mental health and substance use treatment. With Tele-video conferencing units in every county, our 19,000 square mile catchment area is getting smaller every year, and with over fifty years of experience behind us, we’re confident when we tell each and every resident of Northwest Kansas, “We’re Here for You!”
High Plains, a licensed community mental health center, is dedicated to an aggressive pursuit of providing a comprehensive mental health program to the citizens of Northwest Kansas.
