I went to highlands in 2010 in which they helped me tremendously. I was having trouble again and went back 2020 and it was horrible. I ended up signing myself out because I signed myself in. I was treated so bad by the one lady. She wasn’t anything big. She just wanted everybody to think she was. And my first night was so bad that I ended up letting the head know what was going on and I wasn’t the only one complaining. Then she tile the lady and she was talking about me so badly out loud. I could hear everything she was saying. I wasn’t telling on her I was just trying to figure out the rules. Then the rest of my time there I tried to avoid her at all cost. Because I was trying to do better and with her there period nobody got anywhere. I don’t understand why they keep people who aren’t understanding or sympathetic because people are coming there because it’s their last hope. We come there to try to be better but with that kind of workers. It’s a nightmare! Yes it’s a hard job. I have done it. But I knew what I was going into and if I couldn’t be understanding then I would not have ever worked at a place like this. If the staff can’t do it mentally without making it worse then they really don’t need to do this kind of job. I have met the most horrible people working in a place where people go for mental health and they are the worse. I don’t care what they have to put up with they knew that before taking it and if they didn’t until after they need to go. Mental health is serious and needs compassion, sympathetic, a heart. Not bi$$chea
Actual patient review I’ve been sent here more times than I can count coming from a 14 year old who had to stay in the teen and pre teen unit my time here was the worst thing that ever happened I have severe Trauma from this place the staff are so rude. One of the girls in my wing was screaming and crying because the one of the staff had hit her across the face, they then gave her several shots of “booty juice” and now every time I hear someone screaming I completely break down into a panic attack. I also had been slapped, and had bruises/red marks on my body from the staff. I have severe ptsd every time someone raises their hand or lays a finger on me. The staff here is unbelievable and the therapists are a joke all they do is ask “how are you feeling today?” “Do you feel as if any of your meds need to be changed?” Not to mention the lack of privacy I get that you need to keep an eye on Kids but you don’t have to sit ontop of them overall if I could I would give this 0 stars
I’ve waited to make this review until my child was through treatment at a way better hospital. Highland is a joke. My child had a crisis and was sent there. Communication was severely poor with parents. Instead of working with family and my child to get through the crisis, they tried diagnosing them with THREE MAJOR disorders based off yes or no questionnaires, and tried prescribing FIVE DIFFERENT MEDS within 17 hours of their arrival. I was asked to approve these meds before anyone had even talked to me about any diagnosis at all. I refused and asked Highland to transfer my child to a different hospital for a 2nd opinion but the Dr refused transfer bc “we can treat them here so it would be a sideways move.” 1st dr I’ve met who didn’t support a 2nd opinion. I removed my child myself AMA and drove them to Nationwide Childrens Hospital in Columbus. There, my child was taken into the Youth Crisis Stabilization Unit. It’s a short, intensively therapy based program geared to helping your child through the current crisis while developing the tools, mechanisms, and support system needed for them to go home and be able to manage and manage better in the future. They stayed 5 days at NCH. They received no new diagnosis like Highland tried to give. And no meds, bc they felt meds weren’t needed. My child received the help they actually needed and hope for a brighter future. NCH accepts WVMedicaid. If you can, take your child there. But at the least, please make sure that your child doesn’t go to Highland. What Highland does to our youth is nothing short of disgusting, and they shouldn’t be operating at all. My heart is with the children that end up there.
My son has been here twice in 2yrs for schizophrenia and addiction. He talks very highly of the Dr's as well as some of the staff others were very rude i heard one staff member call my son a crack head for asking the time while we were talking on phone. He was sent to emergency room twice the first time staff told him to tell me he fell out of bed while he was trying to tell me about his eye being bloody and he didn't know what happened the other time he was attacked by another patient and had to get his lip stitched up. Overall he spent almost 4 months this last visit came home very medicated with not much change in his condition.
If you have intentions of sending your child here with hopes of bettering them, you should be made aware of the fact that a majority of adolescent patients only get worse and are traumatized by their experience in this hospital. There are very few staff members who have any genuine concern for the patients, and those who do care for the patients, fear being fired for showing such. The staff is not only verbally, but also physically abusive. They also show no concern or even ignore when the patients are in distress. The patients spend 90% of the day in one room, all togethermore than 20 kids, and are not allowed to leave it. Even though there are a few good staff members, the staff is predominantly bad. The staff would even talk bad and gossip about the patients amongst each other and even directly to the patient. I was a patient here for 29 days, and had nearly as much trauma coming out as I did going in. I was 16 and took care of every kid in my unit, until I got discharged, because the staff wouldn’t, so someone had to. I was ridiculed and treated badly by a large majority of the staff for doing so. No matter how “crazy” you may consider your child to be, no one deserves to experience what being in this hospital puts them through.[FHHand if any of the kids I took care of while I was there are reading this, I hope you all are doing okay and I’m glad you all got out. I’ll always be proud of y’all. And I mean that. You guys are good kids]
I had been suffering from severe depression and dealing with a lot of difficult stresses in my life. I had isolated myself from my friends and family. I couldn't coop on my on so I had admitted myself to highland hospital for help. When I arrived my 1st night was a little rough but the next morning the staff and doctors came in. They listened to my needs and provided me with one on one therapy, and group therapy. The staff was great and caring. They provided the up most care and anytime I was needed something or even to talk with to someone they were always available and ready to help me in anyway possible. There was never a moment that I felt alone. They provided us with activities, TV and Netflix and music. The food was good as well. I highly recommend anyone in need for help to get the help they need from highland. They care and listen to your needs.
If I could give zero stars i would. Went here two times both horrible experiences. I was in the teen section once and the kids section another time. The staff was the worst part.. i watched a 8 year old small boy get “booty juice” because he was angry but they gave him multiple shots at once.. later he was crying while walking and was stiff and said his entire body was in pain. Poor kid was 8!!! Another day a lady yelled at a girl with turrets for ticking too loud, she did not apologize after multiple kids said “they are ticking” she shrugged. The excuse for her behavior is that she normally worked with adults and not kids which does not make it acceptable at all. Then while we ate our raw chicken dinner with watery mashed potatoes that were very sketchy.. they ate chinese behind us. A girl had a tantrum and a employee left hand prints and bruises on her the next day after handling her too hard. “Therapy” was a joke. Medication was a joke. If i suggested to take any meds they handed it right to me. Only focused on bad behaved kids not the sad ones. No locks on the bathrooms they were all busted out. Left me unattended for a bath i personally had no issues but the fact they did that was scary to me for OTHER KIDS!! a lady worked there once who was very sweet and got fired for it. She treated us like PEOPLE and got in trouble for it
they say the parents can call to check on your child, good luck with that my daughter was in there for a week and during "call times" i didnt get threw one time ....
Coming from a former patient, this place is the best treatment center I have ever been in. I have been to another place before whilst in the military and it was terrible. This place though, actually helped me get better. The entire staff and team are absolutely wonderful people. All I can do is thank God and thank Highland Hospital.
I got admitted to the childrens west unit about 3-4 months ago and stayed for all most 3 weeks after I tried to commit. Most of the staff don’t care about the you they wouldn’t watch the kids most the time and that ended up in the patients doing nasty stuff. some of them did really care about me tho and was their for me whenever I needed to talk. The day room is really cold so I spent most of my time laying in the hallway talking to others patience. The unit did brake out into big arguments to the point where the kids where all crying and screaming because we where all stuck in a room or hallway with 10 different people and not able to get away and breathe. The food was really bad and the soap they give you gave me an allergic reaction the rooms at night where freezing. It didn’t really do anything for me mentally but physically it did give me time to disappear form everyone I knew and just not feel real for a while. They put you on medicine the Second day your in their and try to diagnose you with A bunch of disorders depending on the same questions they ask you 8 times a week. And if you are reading this and we where in the same unit and we where friends I’m glad you got out and I am so proud of you!.:
