Highland Park, Brooklyn

Description

Highland Park is a park located on the Brooklyn-Queens border. The Brooklyn neighborhood to its south is commonly regarded as Cypress Hills part of the East New York neighborhood.Highland Park was created on the land immediately surrounding Ridgewood Reservoir that was purchased by the City of Brooklyn in 1891 under the jurisdiction of the Highland Park Society. Initially known as Ridgewood Park, between 1901 and 1905 the Brooklyn Department of Parks began improving the area with several structures, a rustic bridge, roads, footpaths, a flower garden and a new lake and fountain. In 1905, the City expanded the park by purchasing the Schenck estate just to the south of the Reservoir. The final expansion occurred in 1906 with purchase of a third parcel to the west from the Department of Water. The park from its earliest days has been a recreational haven for residents of both Brooklyn and Queens. The park ultimately included football fields, baseball fields, tennis courts and (in the winter) a frozen pond for skating. An aquatic garden was added in 1907 and a children's farm garden in 1915. The park is home to The Dawn of Glory World War I monument by sculptor Pietro Montana (dedicated 1925). In 1991 the western section of the park was renamed the Vito P. Battista Playground in memory of Vito Piranesi Battista, a local educator and member of the New York State Assembly.Ridgewood Reservoir was made obsolete by expansion of the city's Catskill and Delaware water systems although it remained in service until 1959. The third basin was used as a backup reservoir with water from the Catskill system until it was finally decommissioned and drained in 1989. The fenced-in basins returned to a natural state, becoming home to a birch forest and grassy marsh and hosting a wide variety of flora and fauna.

Nice open park with lots of stairs. The park is near the highway & separated into three sections. Great place for nature and wildlife. A great place for jogging, walking, running, bicycle riding, etc. There's various amenities; such as tennis courts, basketball, baseball, and handball courts, a community garden, some exercise grounds, and a barbecue/picnic area by the parking space. Overall recommend.
Exciting opportunity to get far away from cars in Brooklyn. Nice clean bike trail circling the old Ridgewood Reservoir. People actually used to drink from that mosquito nursery up until 1959. Now it is home to natural critters and a birch forest.
Beautiful dangerous park. Nice and clean except for the criminals trying to rob people.. The park is clean. People come here for walking, barbecuing, bird watching. Lots of shade. Watch your back and don't go here. Most people just play ball and play in the kids area which is great. The area is pretty bad and very close to other dangerous areas. Warning you are not safe here. Enter at your own risk. Used to be 5 stars until I feared for my safety several times.
Really great park. The reservoir area is lovely to walk around. The highway takes away from the ambience some but its the city what do you expect. Restrooms: They have restrooms
nice park. He has to walk and bike. It has a barbecue area. and the most interesting thing is that it has parking
Nice place to have a running or just take a walk. The length of the circle of the ridgewood reservoir is around 1.6K.
A Great family park with plenty of trees, open space, recreational areas, and stationary BBQ Grills. Also an awesome park to take your dogs for daily walks. Your dogs will love you Oh, and bring your girlfriend so she can get her stretching‍ done
No complaints at all. But there needs to be a real address on file.
Beautiful greenery, looks like it been redone in the last few years nd is still getting new pavements out in where it seems gravel paths used to be. Some areas are sealed off for safety, but otherwise still got some great views. So, worth the trip!
