Historic Myrtle Beach Colored School Museum & Education Center

Description

The Myrtle Beach Colored School served African-American students in the Myrtle Beach area for more than 20 years. Now, a new Historic Myrtle Beach Colored School Museum and Education Center provides a window on that past, as well as a door to the future for all. Thanks to leadership from the City of Myrtle Beach, vision from former students and a partnership among public and private entities, the old school has been preserved in spirit and recreated in fact and continues to fulfill an educational mission.

The Colored School commemorates the advances of the educational process in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina, that had been denied for decades. The building itself is the exact shape and size it was back then. You'll feel the compassion of the experiences various alumni share in a video shown, in one of many exhibit rooms! You'll also see a comprehensive exhibition of Afro American accomplishments down through the years. The Museum is only open on Monday, Wednesday and Friday, from 10am to 12pm
Was a complete pleasure and surprise to visit the museum. Mr. Matthias was a wonderful guide and gave a great tour and a picture of life during that Era. Great community connections and a must see.Visited onWeekdayWait time30–60 minReservation recommendedNoPrice for adult entryFree
Spent a peaceful, calming morning here with the lovely Freda. She has such a wealth of knowledge about the area’s Black History. We are heading to The Rice Museum based on her recommendation and will absolutely be back here to spend more time. We purchased a cookbook and made a good donation. This is free but absolutely worth every donation given.
Very informative and the guide was the best. A local resident who’s seen the changes personally. It’s a sad time I’m our history but if we don’t learn from our mistakes it will happen again. Make sure to check the schedule as it’s only open certain days. Definitely worth a visit and we learned a ton.
Amazing museum! Plan to spend about 45 min to an hour to fully take in the history. Tour guide was fabulous and provided great history of the Colored School vision, as told from previous school attendees. Great history museum located in a separate wing, curated by a local historian. Very, very well done!!
We stopped here on our way out of town and so happy we did. Looking around, hearing the history, it really makes you understand how horrible human beings can be but how, also, a community can band together. Make sure you spend extra time looking around the school project exhibit room. It really is extraordinary. While free, please also consider donating to a good cause, making sure history isn’t forgotten.
Highly recommend visiting this little Community gem. Bursting with historical and community inspiration. The tour was excellent very informative. I brought my daughter here as a school trip and in return received so much more. I highly recommend visiting and learning about the strength and perseverance of this community.Visited onWeekdayWait timeNo waitReservation recommendedNoPrice for adult entryFreeParking spacePlenty of parkingParking optionsFree parking lot

Nice education experience to see a replica of the 4croom schoolhouse. The experience was great. The young lady that gave us the tour was so passionate about her history.
I'm so grateful that a group of people have preserved this important piece of American history.Visited onWeekdayWait timeNo waitReservation recommendedNoPrice for adult entryFree
