The Most Unique Historic and Shopping Destination in Maryland! Discover Historic Savage Mill...Where You Can Play, Shop, Eat, and Relax!

Description

In 1820, Amos Williams and his three brothers borrowed $20,000.00 from their friend John Savage to start a textile weaving business on the banks of the little Patuxent River. The water from the River flowed over a huge 30 foot water wheel which powered the machines that wove the cloth. They named this business Savage Mill from 1822 to 1947.

The primary product woven in the 1800's was canvas. This lightweight, yet strong material was used in making sails for clipper ships that sailed in and out of Baltimore Harbor. This product was also used for tents, cannon covers and other supplies for Civil War armies; painted backdrops for Hollywood’s first silent movies from 1890 to 1900; and canvas cots, truck covers and transport bags used by U.S. soldiers in Europe during both World Wars I and II.

Between 1947 and 1950, the entire Mill was turned into a Christmas display village. Christmas tree ornaments were manufactured and a miniature B&O Railroad train transported visitors to an from the Route 1 parking area. There was also a one ring circus in the huge new weave Room.

The Winer family bought the mill in 1950. It was placed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1974.

The Historic Complex of buildings with over 175,000 square feet is now home to major collector quality antique centers, home furnishing galleries, artist studios, specialty shops, craft boutiques, outdoor adventures, auctions, destination restaurants and wedding facilities.

Historic Savage Mill is truly a great unique shopping, dining, facility with even more than you’d first guess that meets the interests of the entire family. So what are you waiting for? Visit Historic Savage Mill today! We promise you’ll find something fun to do for everyone in your family!

I have personally been visiting this place since 1978 and what a transformation although it's stay true to its form. This is a getaway place to visit at any given time of the year winter spring summer or fall. It is complementary of so many great things. Call simply share the pictures and I always take my friends from out of state to this location for a visit and it is not likely to stop until my death or my car is no longer to be operated by me.
Such a cool place. So many great little shops. Sweet Cascades Chocolate shop was delightful. Had lunch at The Dive. All of our food was fresh and tasty. The homemade potato chips are really great!
A very nice rustic place. Lots of little shops offering furniture, crafts, pottery, and gifts. The event spaces are nice for weddings, ceremonies, and events. Surrounded by wooded area including a zip line course.
I noticed this place is one of the Historical sites in PG County. There are many businesses here from a Bridal Shop, Dive-in Restaurant and Photo studios. Parking lot available but could be a bit difficult on a very busy day.
The Dive restaurant had one of the burger in town. The Alabama. Antique mall the Excellent and very friendly, nice sales clerks at front desk.
Lovely converted mill and school with a very nice selection of shops. Bead Soup great shop for beads, project kits, classes for jewelry making, pottery studio, HUGE antique store, French bakery, gorgeous bridal shop and venue, candy shop, gifts shop, and a few others.
Great place to walk and see the sights. Savage Mill has history, shopping, the arts, and food. The antiques area has a great variety of furniture, clothes, books, collectables, and more. Various independent shops are also located at Savage including a book store, clothing store, and various DIY arts and crafts stores.
I have only been once, for a gathering with my organization, but I hope to return soon with my friend and our kids! The restored old mill is gorgeous, and just has a great atmosphere. It can get easy to get turned around at first though. My work held an all staff gathering in the Great Room, which was amazing. We explored the shops on our breaks, and had a wonderful experience. Loved the “everything is $5” thrift store. Can’t wait to go back with more time to explore!
Great place to shop for lots of unique finds, especially antiques. In the antique center below they will often be open to negotiation if they can reach the seller. I would also suggest checking separate shops hours because the mall hours can differ from artisan hours
Very different and absolutely one of a kind place to shop; including an entire floor of Antiques. rams Head and Bonaparte Breads Bakery are both recommended depending whether you want to eat light or heavy. My personal favorite touch was the used book store "Books With A Past"
