Hodge's Bend Cemetery

About

The Historic Hodge's Bend Cemetery is located at 17245 Old Richmond Road in Sugar Land, Texas

Description

A veteran of “Swamp Fox” Francis Marion’s South Carolina brigade during the American Revolution, Alexander Hodge (b. 1760) brought his family to Texas in 1825. Hodge was prominent among the “Old Three Hundred” settlers. His sons fought in the Texas Revolution. His 1828 land grant from Stephen F. Austin, named Hodge’s Bend, included the site for this cemetery. First grave here was that of his wife, Ruth, who died in 1831. Hodge was buried here in 1836. The cemetery contains about 75 graves, including those of Hodge’s descendants and other early settlers in the area. The last burial here was in 1942.

In March 2016 Steve Hypes, Kevin Clarke & several other volunteers started the clean up of the cemetery. It has taken us a little over a year to get to the progress in the Photos. We became a State of Texas approved 501 (c) charity in May 2016. 100% of the donations go toward improving and restoring of the cemetery. We have a go fund me page that we would appreciate you donating to. If you would like to get involved contact Kevin at [email protected].

Our goal of the Cemetery is the clean the property, improve the grave sites & make it a park like atmosphere. We have already added several chairs, trimmed many trees, mow & weed eat every few weeks, and added a picnic table. The Sugar land bike club built a walking and bike path through our cemetery adding a total of 4 miles through the Culiinan Sugar land park. Come visit we are open 365 days a year from dawn till dusk.

Beautiful historic cemetery located in Old Richmond. R.I.P. Alexander Hodges Revolutionary War Soldier. Hope the city really takes care of this place of rest.
Hodges Bend Cemetery looks great compared to where it was when the present association started to care for it. Anyone who says otherwise has never volunteered to do the work it takes to keep it looking great!! No wonder the Association blocks haters on their facebook. Take a look at the before and after pictures and the volunteers who helped get the cemetery look good. Even the Fort Bend authorities who recently inspected the site said the work done has been phenomenal.
Great place to do some paranormal investigation. The history is very interesting so is all the changes they had made to the cemetery itself.
Dark area with really bad vibes. I respect the departed, however negative vibes from this section up to the part of the abandoned shed are very creepy. Its very quiet literally birds stop singing near this area, hardly any people too and its very oddly dark.
Very old and quaint little cemetery. A little neglected, but, not terrible. Nice spot to chill.
I had to do a project on this place way back, and it is crazy how much history is in it. Did you know that Alexander Hodge came to Texas with Stephen F Austin and the Old 300? What is currently Cullinan Park used to be his sugar plantation.
Visited the cemetery in July, and it was unbelievably overgrown and absolutely swarming with mosquitoes. The cemetery is at the end of a walking trail and is also accessible by a street entrance, so the wild, overgrown, and quite frankly somewhat dangerous grass/mosquito combo happening here is unacceptable. The cemetery itself is beautiful though, with tons of historical value. It just needs to be maintained properly so it isn't lost to time and mosquitos.
Very peaceful. If you are walking through the hiking trails of Cullinan Park you will pass by here. There is a little table to rest.
The caretaker is doing a good job with the limited resources. He actually volunteers and mow the grass. and do some cleanup The cemetery has gotten recent status as a 501c3 nonprofit organization. Hodge’s Bend Cemetery Association
I used to visit this place quite a bit over a decade ago. Very peaceful place. Had an odd occurrence at night one time by an unnamed infant's grave. Definitely a historic place.
