Hugh Mills Stadium began its life in 1936 under the name of Albany Municipal Stadium and renamed in 1952 in honor of Hugh Mills Sr. known as the "father of Southwest Georgia Sports". The stadium is actually constructed on the site of a lime sink which forms a natural bowl. In 1963 changes were made to the stadium by adding bleachers to the east side, along with a press box and locker rooms. The addition increased the seating capacity to 11,000. In 1995, the stadium received a major face lift which took 6 years to complete. A new pressbox was constructed, enclosed and air-conditioned. A handicapped seating area was added. Permanent lockers, air conditioning and carpet was added to the dressing rooms. An athletic training facility was constructed. The track was increased from 6 to 8 lanes with a Mondo surface being installed in 2000; the high jump area was increased to accommodate two jumping pits. The field was resodded, the irrigation system was replaced, and the drainage system around the field was updated. The parking area was enlarged and a soccer field and all purposed practice field was installed.Today, the stadium stays busy as the home of the Albany High Indians, Dougherty High Trojans, Monroe High Tornadoes, Westover High Patriots and middle school football and track. The stadium also is the host site of the GISA Boys and Girls Track and Field Championships and GHSA Girls Track and Field Championships.
