I feel I need to speak up in regards to the claim made by another female in these reviews. I am a graduate of the IBEW/NJATC Apprenticeship program so I can speak from experience. I was never discriminated against by this union hall. While I have encountered occasional discriminatory individuals while working in the trade, it has not been my experience as a whole and never from the union hall itself. Acceptance into the apprenticeship program is not a guarantee. You must apply and be selected based on test results and an interview process and then the best applicants are selected for that year, as there are a limited number of apprenticeship slots available per year. If this is something you're interested in, it may take several years of applying before you're accepted into the program, IF you ever are. There are certain criteria you must meet before you can even test. Things you can do in the meantime: 1 brush up on your reading comprehension, algebra, etc. These are part of the testing process 2 ask about our CE/CW program. It is a training program as well but again, not a guarantee for employment. Those positions are filled according to the job calls available at the time. 3 Any work experience in any related fields or construction in general, is helpful. I would encourage anyone who is interested in the program to go talk to the union hall and ask an abundance of questions regarding your options and the timelines for work prospects. Then follow up with the NJATC as well. I assure you, females working in the trade are not frowned upon. They're encouraged and given the same opportunity as the men. But be sure, this is not a cake walk. You just need to work and pull your own weight. Male or female, you're expected to work and work hard to make a good name for all the Union brothers/sisters who are working together to do the same.
I was discriminated against by Local 584, presumably for being a woman who came across as overly enthusiastic to participate in their electrical training program. I tried everything I could to convince them to just give me a chance but I fear there was never any dice to start with. They had it in their hearts to reject me before I even put in an application. It's heartbreaking, you go to college, study hard and nobody will let you have a respectable career.
Great guys to work with. Very helpful, they want everyone to succeed.
