This page was founded following requests from the Community for updates on complaints. We also hope to inform the public on what our office accomplishes.
The Inspections Commissioner is responsible for enforcing the constantly changing regulations, laws and codes. Building Inspectors follow up on complaints of unsafe or unsightly buildings, new construction, and issue and follow up on permits. Code Inspectors enforces city ordinances that deal with housing, rental registration, nuisances, weeds, trash, litter, and general maintenance, and check to see that residents and businesses are in compliance with local and state codes and/or ordinances.
The City of Hammond believes the best approach to enforcing local codes is through voluntary compliance. It is the mission of the Inspections Department to educate property owners about the benefits of the department. An effective Inspections Department benefits Hammond residents with:
* Higher property values;
* A better city image;
* Less crime;
* Greater community pride;
* Safer, more attractive neighborhoods;
* Fewer substandard housing units that often pose threats of fire and risk to residents;
* A stable population.
