"NOT AT FULL OPERATION - With over 200 animals from exotic locations around the world, the Jackson Zoo is the largest and oldest live animal attraction in the state of Mississippi. Started in 1921 by a group of local firefighters downtown, the Jackson Zoo has become a historic landmark that focuses on a modern educational approach to wildlife and conservation."

This zoo was lovely and was definitely much more beautiful than I anticipated. Loved the range of animals in there. Felt a little sorry for the lonely ones like the Giraffe, Tiger, Black Bear, Rhinoceros but that's just my animal loving sensitive side lol. I love how they made the habitats feel real for the animals in there. The only down side was, there was no real restaurants just a few food trucks. It would also be really nice to have a place for souvenirs as well. All in all, I am giving this place a 5 star because it surpassed my expectations. :
My family and I are visiting Jackson Mississippi on vacation. We were excited to visit the Zoo and to our surprise we were disappointed. The grass is over grown, majority of the exhibits were closed and the animals that are there appears to be kept to the bare minimum. We were informed by an employee and another park guest the zoo may be moving and little monies is going into the up keep of the attraction. If the zoo isn’t going to be maintained for the better good of the animals, employees and park guests please close for business and move the remaining animals to another facility that will care for them as they should be.
First time there! It was a little different from the bigger zoos. There was plenty of space and time to explore. The animals there were fat and happy! They have a large variety of animals, and appeared to be acquiring more as many of the exhibits we're without inhabitants. It was early in the season and very happy to have the experience with my son, who LOVED it! The carousel was fun as carousels are! I bet it will be spectacular during the height of the summer season! I've been told the train should return then. Be prepared to prepurchase tickets or have cash on hand to enter, as they didn't take cards at the door. The carousel rides are $2 each, so prepurchase at admissions or have cash on hand! Also, remember to carry in something to eat and drink, as they don't have food nor drink available to purchase except for unreliable Pepsi machines and one snack machine inside the admissions building. For the fun experience, friendliness of the park staff and especially the price of admission, it was worth trying on our spring break to Jackson getaway!
Close this place down!!! These people have a sick and twisted idea of what it means to take care of animals. These habitats are not ideal and they do not have the proper things needed for survival. There was barely any animals, probably because they all died!!!! They had no food. No water. Over grown grass. Enclosures too small. Not enough shelter from the heat. The larger animals seemed to be suffering. The Rhino had no large body of water to cool down in, only a little tiny sprinkler. The cougar could barely breathe as well as the bear. Not only that, they did not take cards, everything was beat down and falling apart, and the gift shop had like nothing in it. Seeing these animals like this broke my heart. I started a petition to shut this place down. As soon as it gets enough attention, I will be bringing this to the attention of the city of Jackson. Don’t give your money to these people. They don’t care about their animals. They just want money.
Great experience for the price! This zoo does an incredible job with the limiting funding they receive. They have several new exhibits opening soon! The keepers were friendly and incredibly passionate about public relations. Moreover, the animals that are on exhibit were active with excellent viewing areas. There is even a SMALL attached water park play area for those hot Mississippi summer days! I would highly recommend a visit, show the local zoo some love!
Super hot the day we went so not a lot of activity. The place needs some attention....can see it has been let go. They are trying to improve things and it is nice it is in town but if the city won't invest, it will suffer as well as the animalsVisited onWeekdayWait timeNo waitReservation recommendedNoPrice for adult entry$1–5
Love this zoo. My kids have a ball every time. Animals look happy, you can get very close and they are very interactive.Visited onWeekendWait timeNo waitReservation recommendedNoPrice for adult entry$1–5
Sad and disappointing to say the least. There were very few animals and ZERO exhibits. It literally took us like 35/45 min to view the entire grounds. It was a ghost town. There were no food stands or entertainment. Just tall grass and weeds. It looked abandoned. I hope to see this zoo restored to it's former glory one day but right now those animals look like they're suffering. Relocation looks to be the only option because the streets are awful and it's not appealing to visitors locally or out of state. Just another derelict property.
It was horrible!! It was so sad. It's January but it was a good nice day. Almost perfect temp. Was so sad It made us want to cry. Black bear didn't have water to even swim. Otter was alone and had nasty water with no water flow. Water was green and brown. Couldn't see through it. He was itchy too. Even though the water part of the zoo was closed, the otter was still there. The hippo looks so sad that we had to watch to make sure he was real. He could barely move and his nose was on the ground while standing, yet seemed like he couldn't move!
Undergoing a transformation....it's still a great day. Zoo keepers are very friendly and will tell you what's going on with the animals. The splash pool is a definite YES and so much fun for the kiddos.
