This place should be shut down! Cages falling in, potholes, only saw 1 tiger, 1 bear, 1 rhino, a couple chimps, monkeys and GOLDFISH! Grass is taller than some exhibits, trees down all over the placefrom a storm 3 weeks ago No food/drink options. Best thing was the snake house with a few snakes! Splash pad barely worked. Aquarium building had dirty murky water full of goldfish!
The setting of the zoo is lovely. It is a very old zoo, 115 yrs I think. That said, it has fallen on hard times, especially through the pandemic. They only have 3 full time staff I think. The animals are all healthy and the grounds are clean. animals we have not seen elswhere: Kookaburras Rhino Ruffed tailed brown/red coated lemurs 7 alligators we have seen token small ones at other zoos, but these guys were huge! Baby Black bear. Lost its mother and they are trying to find a buddy for him. The carousel was fun! Lots of interesting animals to ride there.
the pictures should speak for themselves. it was way worse in person. i feel extremely bad for the animals. literally, couldn’t see half of them because of the weeds. they barely have any animals. from the looks of it, they care more about the splash pad. the cafe wasn’t open and grown up, restrooms too. the vending machine they did have for drinks, you have to click one drink to get what you want click a peach fanta for a pepsi. absolutely just sad. i would add videos. but the bear exhibit was the saddest for me. the bridges were literally dry rotted and falling apart. the picture of it was loose, and the video i have you can literally shake it and it almost falls off. won’t be going back! they should be shut down for the sake of the animals.
Everything is run down. Grass is over grown. Animals are depressed. Staff does not care and the place is barely running. This place needs to be shut down and I recommend everybody to tell them to do the same. The animals are in extremely poor conditions. It’s a joke the city runs it the way they do.Visited onWeekdayWait timeNo waitReservation recommendedNoPrice for adult entry$16–20
This was an underwhelming experience for myself and my gbabies. The zoo looks like its been abandoned and the few maybe ten animals we saw looked either depressed or dead. Attention to upkeep could make a big difference, although the undesirable location makes it even more unappealing.Visited onWeekendWait timeNo waitReservation recommendedNoPrice for adult entry$6–10
My boyfriend and I are from out of town and we were so excited to come here after looking at the website and their map, we were amazed at how cheap the tickets were $8 per adult. We went today Sunday and it was just very disappointing, there were very few animals and the ones they did have, most of them were alone it seemed despite them being social animals and the few animals that weren’t alone there was only one other. A lot of exhibits were closed. Cafe was closed. Carousel was closed. Gift shop was practically empty. Wooden board walk and gazebo falling apart. The animals we did get to see looked bored, hot and depressed. I took a video of a cougar and you can hear how hard it was breathing despite sitting in shade, didn’t see any form of water for them to drink it was that way in most of the enclosures . All of the animals were barely moving literally just an ear twitch if they moved at all, a little kid asked if one of the animals was a stuffed animal because it didn’t move one bit They didn’t take card. Bathroom wasn’t stocked. We saw ONE employee the entire time. Now I see why the tickets were so cheap. I don’t usually leave bad reviews but I feel bad for the animals. The black and white colobus monkey in the picture was alone, I looked it up and it says they like to live in troops of 5-15. He looked so sad and was holding his own hand
The sweet lady in the "gift shop" was the best part of our visit. For starters, right as we walk through the gate, my 7 year old starts screaming because we were greeted by a 3.5' long snake just crawling around. It's the South, it's warm, snakes are everywhere so, no biggie. We helped with that situation then continued our adventure. It didn't take long to realize over half of the exhibits were empty. Some had signs saying that new animals were coming soon, but they've obviously been posted for a while. The entire area is very grown up, but is supposedly an attempt to keep their exhibits "as natural as possible". Maybe. But that doesn't explain the thick layer of leaves and mud that line the cracked, uneven, and sinking walkways. The zoo sign and official logo feature an elephant and giraffe but don't expect to actually see either of those animals. The otter house is also chained shut so you can't observe them swimming below the surface. Their water is so dirty, I'm not sure if you could see them anyway. The chimpanzees were probably our favorite as it's the cleanest and nicest, but the wood walkway through that area is questionable at best. Playground wasn't accessible and the only options for snacks or drinks were a sketchy hotdog trailer that sold room temperature soft drinks and water or a Dippin Dots/popsicle trailer that seriously overcharged. And good luck finding someone if you have a question. Employees are difficult to come by and the one time we did find some, it was 4 females leaning against a rail too busy talking among themselves to even acknowledge our presence. This once great park is definitely showing it's age, despite the claims of ongoing projects. The animals look malnourished and depressed, especially the big cats. They literally gave me Tiger King vibes. The ONLY reason I'm giving 3 stars is because 1 my youngest son had fun and it was something I was able to do with both of my boys and 2 the gift shop employee. Whatever you're paying her, it isn't enough. I think it may be time for Jackson to say goodbye to the park or commit to getting it back in an acceptable state. I'd rather see it closed than to watch it continue to fall into disrepair.
This zoo was lovely and was definitely much more beautiful than I anticipated. Loved the range of animals in there. Felt a little sorry for the lonely ones like the Giraffe, Tiger, Black Bear, Rhinoceros but that's just my animal loving sensitive side lol. I love how they made the habitats feel real for the animals in there. The only down side was, there was no real restaurants just a few food trucks. It would also be really nice to have a place for souvenirs as well. All in all, I am giving this place a 5 star because it surpassed my expectations. :
There were only a few exhibits. The facility was run down and needs work. Very disappointing. No giraffes, elephants, lions....empty cages everywhere. One lonely rhino.Wait timeNo waitReservation recommendedNoPrice for adult entry$6–10
My family and I are visiting Jackson Mississippi on vacation. We were excited to visit the Zoo and to our surprise we were disappointed. The grass is over grown, majority of the exhibits were closed and the animals that are there appears to be kept to the bare minimum. We were informed by an employee and another park guest the zoo may be moving and little monies is going into the up keep of the attraction. If the zoo isn’t going to be maintained for the better good of the animals, employees and park guests please close for business and move the remaining animals to another facility that will care for them as they should be.
