Jefferson Patterson Park is a hidden gem in Calvert County. This park is VERY dog friendly. There are an unbelievable amount of paved paths, great parking, and wonderful views. We love to walk as a family here. My daughter takes her bike and rides often. The parks have great signs all over showing the history of the area. There are also great events held at the park.
An ideal park for taking the family, dogs, significant other, or yourself. Even better if you bring a picnic basket and a blanket. Before going I would bring up their website, so you can see what it all offers. On my first visit, there was a wedding. There's a kayak/canoe launch area, and a handful of trails, you can learn about its history, and see how the Indigenous people might have lived. I am sure I am missing other things the Jefferson Patterson Park & Museum has to offer. Playground: One small playground that I saw and it was between the visitor & education centers. There is a small "circle" parking lot, follow it around & you'll eventually see it. Restrooms: The actual Visitor Center has bathrooms. Then throughout the park & there were a few Porta Johns. Dog-friendliness: The few times I've visited I've seen folks walking their dogs. Picnic area: There isn't a designated "picnic area." If you pull up the park's map, you'll see picnic tables sporadically sprinkled throughout the park. And then there are large open grassy areas where a blanket & a basket of food could be enjoyed.
Beautiful waterfront park on the Patuxent river! A paved path, with indigenous exhibits towards the middle of the trail. The trail is wheelchair accesible. However, not so much to get the water. There is also plenty of parking!
Great place for the family, we go regularly kayaking, and paddle boarding while the boys swim and fish. The pups love it too! Wether swimming or just walking the grounds enjoying the scenery we always have a blast!
This place has way too much to offer for me to cover in this review but I highly recommend this park for several reasons. Just a beautiful park to explore which will take hours if not a couple of trips to really take it all in. Archeological sites, a museum, Maryland archeological conservation laboratory that is open on certain days, interactive educational programs, local events like dog events and Pyro jam the best firework show I’ve seen. Plenty of hidden little beaches and a couple of larger beaches to explore. Plus a place to launch your own kayaks. A great place to take the dog which I do almost every time. It seems like almost weekly classes to attend but again you need to check out their websites because there is no way to cover everything this place offers. The historical Patterson home is still standing in great shape. If you walk past that there is a nice beach and large pier to walk down. It was also a great place to take our family photos. Be careful when you are driving in what I call the tunnel of trees as so many stop to take photos. On the other side of the park they have the woodland Indian village setup which is great for kids to see how the natives lived. Just a fun, beautiful and educational place to visit.
Nice set of trails—mostly paved or boardwalks—alongside open fields. Some nice sets of informative signs about local history, nature, and archaeological sites. Good views of the water and coast. Worth a visit!
Great place to walk and relax. Very scenic views and opportunities to learn local history.
The Native American and early non-Native history displays were very interesting and well done! The waterfront walk was also lovely. Not much shade, so plan accordingly. Great place for an educational and nature stroll. Enjoy!
Lovely park with developed trails. Not overly scenic. Restrooms: portapotties are located at the parking lot and along each trail. Trails: 4-5 miles of trails trails through the woods and around corn fields Point Trail follows a paved road doubles as the 1812 trail past the museum and down a hill to the point of the peninsula where a small non-swimming beach and beautiful pier are located. You can then follow the trail around the corn field to walk back to the parking lot. This walk is along a gravel road and there is thick brush blocking the view of the water. I recommend just walking back via the paved road. As of June 2021 the North East corner of the point trail is overgrown and unpasible you have to take the shortcut back up to the paved road at the halfway point. Woodland Indian Trail: Around a large grassy field. The south side of the trail follows the tree line with no notable sights. North side passes archeological sights. Suggesting taking the north side of this trail and connecting to the Riverside Trail via the boardwalk. This Riverside Trail is also around a large empty field with no views of the river.
Love that this park is dogfriendly. It has been over 2 years since I visited and so happy that I came back. I forget how beautiful the water view is. The river trail is paved and the boardwalk thru the marshland has a great view. The Indian village is completely compared to the last time I was here they were working on it. The park had a better layout than I remembered. Definitely explore the water area along the river trail and down at the end where Pattersons Point is. At Pattersons Point... There is a parking lot here with a group of white building. I took the trail to Patterson's Point and the walk was about 1/2 mile from the parking lot. Be sure to spray for bugs especially for those who always get bug bites. I got out of the car for just a few minutes and got 2 bug bites. I did spray myself with OFF deep woods shortly after and that definitely helped. In the trail, just passed the iron gates is the retreat and before the iron gates to the right is the archeology site that I didn't explore because it is too hot for my little ones. As I got closer the Patterson's Point the air didn't smell fresh at all. The little beach area was nice and the view was amazingly beautiful. There is a boardwalk that goes in front of the old cabin and ends at the pier with another amazing view. It's definitely worth checking it out. For those who have challenges in walking or mobility, it looks like you could drive there and the area at Patterson's Point is wide enough to park and turn around. ------ I really like this park a lot. It has a museum in the visitors center, and the area along the water has a nice beach area with a beautiful view of the water. This park is fairly large, and there was a wedding there when I visited. It is also dog friendly, and if you are bringing your dogs, be sure the dog has flea/tick treatment. The lady at the visitor's center warned me about the park having a lot of ticks, and she was very friendly. Luckily for me, my dog didn't pick up any. We walked the trails, and I enjoy the beach area the most. I like the Woodland Indian Village. I would come back again.
