JNCL and NCLIS represent the language profession to the United States. As professional organizations in teaching, translation, interpreting, testing, research, and many other fields, we raise public awareness of language as an enterprise vital to the U.S.
Through advocating for the language enterprise in the US, JNCL-NCLIS works to
· facilitate the free movement of people, information, and ideas,
· build up mutual understanding and acceptance of cultural and linguistic diversity, and
· Promote the personal development of the individual
The mission of JNCL-NCLIS is to ensure that Americans have the opportunity to learn English and at least one other language, to advance the language profession in the US, and to raise awareness about the importance of language and international education to the national interest. We advocate to shape national policy for Foreign Language and international education and to raise the profile of the language enterprise.
"JNCL-NCLIS represents over 100 national, regional and state organizations encompassing virtually all areas of the language field: the major and less-commonly taught languages, including English and English as a second language, bilingual education, the classics, linguistics, exchanges, research, technology, and translation. In 1972, the Joint National Committee for Languages JNCL began as an informal coalition of eight national language teaching associations, and now has grown to over 100 members, including national, regional, and state organizations. JNCL is an entirely member-funded nonprofit education policy association, and it represents more than 300,000 professionals under its three-tiered governance."
