Seattle's premiere progressive Jewish Community. Offering Shabbat and holidays, programs, celebrations, social activism and alternatives in Jewish education for all ages, in a warm welcoming Reconstructionist community. www.kadima.org
As a Reconstructionist community, Kadima uses metaphor, poetry and a relevant, accessible liturgy to welcome members whose Jewish beliefs and practices span a spectrum from theistic to humanistic.
Multicultural households are welcome, including non-Jewish partners and family members. Everyone is encouraged to celebrate and learn more about progressive Judaism.
Kadima seeks to integrate a wide range of Jewish experience into its priorities and practices. It is committed to making its programs and community accessible to its members and to those searching for a Jewish home.
As challenging and complex issues arise in the Jewish and general communities, Kadima aspires to function as your progressive Jewish salon, where it's safe to discuss and debate issues, including on Israel, the work of achieving Israeli-Palestinian peace, spirituality, Jewish identity, and arts and culture.
Kadima’s Jewish education program includes twice-monthly Sunday school classes with an anti-bias curriculum for children 5-14 years old. Kadima’s Pre-K class for four-year-olds meets twice monthly. Both children and adults are provided with an excellent Jewish education in the context of a strong, supportive and diverse community. Special emphasis is given to Jewish social ethics, the full inclusion of women’s experience and mentoring for activism.
Bar and Bat Mitzvah students participate in Judaic and Hebrew studies, mitzvah programs and community building activities. Madrichim (adult mentors) work with students and families who are preparing for their Bar/Bat Mitzvah ceremonies. Adult education at Kadima includes workshops, visiting lecturers and an annual spring retreat. Adult educational programs explore progressive Judaism, spiritual development, cultural connections and social activism.
Opportunities for learning and celebration are part of Kadima’s groundbreaking Women’s Torah. The Torah was completed in early Fall 2010. A community-wide four-day celebration was held in Seattle in October 2010 and included sewing the 62 panels together, talks by the WTP scribes and artists and the first reading from this Torah. Kadima commissioned this historic sefer Torah, which was jointly created by the world’s first international community of sofrot (women Torah scribes). Several American women artists created its adornments and embellishments. The Women’s Torah Project has received an outpouring of support and media attention throughout the United States, Canada and Israel.
Kadima is a co-founder and co-sponsor with the Arab Center of Washington of the Middle East Peace Camp for Children. MEPC offers campers ages 5–12 years and counselors ages 13–21 years old a great opportunity to work toward peace through friendship, understanding and summer fun.
