All About Katy Walker
As Katy puts it, “doing this is peace, there’s is so much going around me and when I sit down to work, everything is quiet.”
For Katy, making dolls is a hobby and a love. Each doll is unique, and each holds its own kind of special meaning. Katy finds her inspiration from the children in her neighborhood and the children that she used to work with in the preschool/day care she started and ran for 13 years. In her words, “Children are beautiful and these dolls are made so that children can see themselves in the dolls and see that they are beautiful. A lot of times children don’t feel that way, that isn’t right.” Each doll that Katy makes truly is beautiful and special. She begins with an idea that she says, “comes to her while she is dreaming.” Each doll starts as a bit of stuffing and some brown-colored cloth. Katy sews and stuffs each doll by hand and then decides which hairstyle and outfit are right for the doll. Finally, she lets the outfit and hairstyle determine what kind of face she should paint on. She has made everything from an angel to a nurse. There is nothing that she won’t try. For Katy, it isn’t just the final product, it’s the process, and it isn’t just about the sale it’s about the smile on the little girl’s face when she’s holding one of the dolls.
