Kearney Whitewater Park

About

“The potential that Kearney holds for boating enthusiasts ranges from casual Sunday floats to regional competitions that attract competitors from great distances, it’s simply a matter of deciding what fits in Kearney.” - Scott Shipley, S2o Design

Description

Turning Flat Water Into Whitewater

The goal of the Kearney Whitewater Association is to transform the Kearney Canal Tailrace and Turkey Creek into a recreational water trail. Phase I of the water trail will be the development of two landings - one (entry) landing at Yanney Park and a second (exit) landing near Midway Auto Group in south Kearney. Phase I will also include exploring the feasibility of whitewater features on the stream below 11th Street. The whitewater park and water trail will be family friendly venues, ideal for both beginners or experts and it will be available to the public free of charge. This will greatly enhance the beauty and ambience of Kearney's parks and south entry along 2nd Avenue. Whitewater parks have been proven to attract visitors from long distances and have a positive economic impact in the areas where they have been developed. A whitewater park and water trail in Kearney will also have recreational, environmental and cultural benefits on the Kearney area.

Nebraska Public Power District (the owner of the canal) and the City of Kearney have reached an agreement where NPPD will allow recreational use of the canal below 11th Street and the development of a landing near the NE corner of Yanney Park. After the canal confluences with Turkey Creek (SE corner of Yanney) the stream is public domain. The city also reached an agreement with Midway Automotive Group to develop an exit landing on their property between 2nd Avenue and Central Avenue. Phase I of the project will also include further clean up of the stream and placing signage in appropriate locations.
