The Ocean Art Gallery displays a selection of seascape painter Wade Koniakowsky’s work from original canvas oil paintings and giclees to his signature Polynesian surfboard art. Impressionist paintings of ocean inspired themes, the rich colors of his oil paintings of ocean waves and coastal scenes take you on a restful, rejuvenating vacation! His imageries reflect the familiar coastal landmarks and surf spots from local Blacks Beach, La Jolla Cove, Luscomb’s Point and the Oceanside Pier to the tropical, dreamlike Hawaiian beaches.
BEST WAY TO VISIT: A leisurely Sunday afternoon stroll in the Solana Beach Cedros Avenue Design District through the farmers market, specialty shops and bistros and olive oil and wine tastings leads to a blank canvas resting on an easel. It will be a mesmerizing hour or so before that canvas comes to life with the easygoing brush strokes of Wade Koniakowsky. The gallery is open every day.
Koniakowsky is committed to and passionate about his art. He began painting at the young age of six. He humbly shares that he has “always been creative and has had something rolling around his brain; a gift.” A surfer before he was 12, he crafted and designed his own boards accentuated with his own artistic elements. It was only natural that his art would pay homage to the surf culture.
As he mixes small amounts of colors on his palate to find his desired shade of blue for the sky, Koniakowky shares what motivates him: beauty, Polynesian culture, being a surfer, and an appreciation for the ocean culture, to name a few.
“I love to create. I love to paint!” he says.
The international acclaim Koniakowsky has garnered for his ocean-influenced artwork is best illustrated by his numerous accomplishments. His art is showcased in galleries from Hawaii to the East Coast. He has been highlighted in countless publications. He has been a featured artist in collaborations with ROXY, Tommy Bahama, Cobian with Bethany Hamilton and countless surf competitions. His signature paintings hang in Billabong stores nationwide, Duke’s restaurants and in the homes of many private collectors.
Prior to opening his gallery and dedicating himself to his craft, he worked in advertising as a creative director. In the span of his 25 year career he successfully spearheaded national campaigns for Fortune 500 brands and earned countless awards.
The vibrant oils that adorn the walls at his gallery make for the perfect, dreamlike escape. Soulful renditions of a favorite San Diego Beach or custom one-of-a-kind surfboards can be commissioned.
Ocean Art by Koniakowsky is located in the Solana Beach Cedros Avenue Design District at 312 S. Cedros Ave. Each Sunday the artist (travel permitting) does a live ocean art demo at the gallery from 1-5 p.m.
