Kress Legal Center is a 4 story building with a beautiful lobby adorned by an original mural painted and designed by Russell Buckingham, a New York based artist. The Kress Legal Center was renovated by the Cort Companies and received the Glenn Allen Award in 2006. Constructed in 1930 and designed by architect John G. Fleming, S.H. Kress began to build five and ten cent stores on America's Main Streets shortly after the turn of the century. By World War II, Kress stores formed a distinctive part of the downtown streetscape in more than two hundred towns and cities in thirty states. This S.H. Kress Building was decorated with terra cotta elements from the renowned Gladding McBean firm and boasts one of the City's finest Art Deco facades. Today, this building houses the San Joaquin County Bar Association, The San Joaquin County Law Library, and multiple private law firms and entities.
