I treated myself to an R & R Retreat for Mother's Day weekend. I arrived on Friday at 2p and my room was not ready. The gentleman that checked me in was very nice and did his best to assure me that my room was being prepared. Him and another representative encouraged me to walk around and directed me to explore. After a 4 hour drive, i just wanted to settle in and lay down. An hour and a half later my room was ready. To say the least i was irritated. In my opinion, the food was subpar. So Friday i went to bed hungry. Saturday, breakfast was good. You really can't mess breakfast up. Lunch on Saturday was just , eh... and Saturday for dinner, i didn't even bother to go to the dining hall. I was supposed to stay for four days and leave on Tues. I woke up Sunday morning, packed my things and left before 7:30a. I stayed in the Annex. My private room was perfect for one person. Just know there is no AC or TV. I paid for Introduction to Ayurveda. I went Friday night and i enjoyed the class. I did not attend Saturday's classes and i left early Sunday morning and didn't attend that class. Because i left 2 days early, i have over $1000.00 credit. So i will absolutely use it and hope for a better experience.
I went for some R&R for my birthday in late May and had such a rejuvenating experience. The food was delicious, and there were plenty of vegan, vegetarian, and ayurvedic options. There were plenty of class options for mind, body and spirit. I really enjoyed the digital detox and that most others were respectful and did the same. The yoga classes were wonderful and the teachers were great at making sure that everyone felt comfortable doing only what felt good. All in all, it was exactly what I needed and look forward to going again.
This place honestly feels like summer camp for adults. I meditated, did yoga, danced, and made a lot of friends in the process. The food and accommodation are suitable, but nothing special. The staff Michelle and Chris = goats, the dance classes, and the views were all spectacular. I definitely hope to come back soon.
The stars: The location, the hikes, and all yoga teachers I had were amazing! The food was good most items needed added salt, plenty, and clean dining halls. Plenty of classes to choose from and to keep busy. The minuses: The front staff at least the ones I encountered were not knowledgeable on the programs and correct info. Also not helpful when I told them about my hot water wasn’t working and other issues I had. The website booking confirmation lacked the info about my room not having a private bathroom and therefore I was charged an additional $480 for 3 nights upon arrival! I did bring it up and was told to write it on a comment letter which I did. Bottom line I think If you are alone and looking for an intimate and more personal experience with your R and R this is not for you since this is a huge school like complex as someone else mentioned on the reviews However, if you are with a friend or a group and want to take some time off and do some yoga and hikes this would be a great time. If I go again I would not stay there, I would just take a day pass to enjoy the classes.
I was so super excited about finally coming here, but I left a night early. High points were the food -- I am not used to having so many good vegetarian options, and there were yummy GF baked goods. I also had a really good massage. The grounds are beautiful too. I ended up exploring Lenox, Stockbridge, and Great Barrington, which are all very cute towns. But the building is somehow claustrophobic and a little creepy. The outdoor space is nice, but inside felt stuffy and dark, especially in the dining room and not that conducive to lounging. The front desk staff is not welcoming at all, or knowledgeable. When I checked in the staff member pointed out the schedule for the rest of the day. I asked her what "Ayurveda for Health" was and she said, "Well I don't know," like it was a really strange/out of the blue question. She said I should ask someone else and sort of waved toward the front desk. I still don't know! And this is a hard topic to Google! I stayed in the Annex, in a double room, which also felt really claustrophobic. It also said on the website that those rooms have AC, but they do not. There was a sign by the door about climate control that explained.... how to open and close the window. I didn't want to hang out in the room either, and after two nights I felt desperate to just get out of there. For the money I would find a cute B&B for the next getaway.
Love the vibe, love the quiet, love the food, love the classes, love the surrounding countryside. I don't love the drive to get here, but that's a small price to pay. I've stayed in the annex as well as the main building and I prefer the luxuries that are offered in the annex, specifically the rooms with private baths. Last few times I was there, they weren't serving coffee in the cafeteria - which really SUCKED - but I think they may have changed this policy. This didn't detract from my love of my experiences here however ... it just posed a challenge.
Spent a week here for some R&R, everything was absolutely fantastic. Great food every day, amazing classes and a relaxing environment all around. I will definitely be coming back.
Kripalu used to be an extraordinary place. I'm booking now since the pandemic and haven't had my stay yet, but it's clear things have changed with respect to communication and staff. It's 'just like anywhere else"- contradictory information, some real rudeness, insufficient training on how to treat customers . They used to 'live' the Kripalu values. Someone wrote below: "Staff is incredibly rude and unhelpful. They completely ruined my visit and the reason i will never return. The website has misleading and incomplete information from what staff say. To book most activities you have to call and leave a message for someone to hopefully call you back." I have found all of that to be true before even arriving they havent ruined my visit but it used to be they made you look forward to it. Some still do. Some sound like children or scolding parents at the registration desk. No question the catalog/website have incomplete that differs from what staff say. I can only hope that when I get there the new emphasis on commercial rather than spiritual values and the hiring without enough discrimination or training is not in evidence.
I have been going to Kripalu for 8 years and I can confidently say that it is my favorite place on earth. The life transformations that have occurred for me here go beyond words. I use this magical mountain oasis as a refuge from the craziness of the modern world in which I can learn, heal, and connect. I cannot recommend this place enough!
I love it! Great retreat! I would suggest optional social hours, like outdoors s’mores evening so we can socialize:
