Infants - 8th Grade
La Scuola is an inquiry based, Reggio Emilia inspired, progressive school located in Miami, Florida, welcoming children from 3 months - 8th grade.
La Scuola fosters a nurturing environment of open-ended exploration, curiosity and growth for children, teachers, and parents that deepens our connections to the community and the world around us. Our school is committed to providing authentic language exposure to children through student-directed activities that incorporate service-learning, community involvement, environmental activism, and culturally based experiences. It is our main objective to foster a connection between children of different cultural and linguistic backgrounds in an environment that fosters curiosity and exploration.
We view children as powerful individuals. We respect children for who they are now, as well as for their potential. While we are focused on preparing children for their future, we also attend to their current intellectual and creative needs, making their days in our school as fulfilling as we hope their futures will be.
Our school has spacious classrooms in addition to many other learning environments. There is a center Piazza, located at the entrance of the school, which welcomes the children, parents, staff and visitors. It is a space filled with natural light filtering through the large windows that provokes the exchange of information between the inside and the outside: the season, the weather, and the light at different times of the day. It is an inviting place in the school that encourages encounters between the children, the families, and the teachers, where stories are created and where relationships surface!
In the entrance of our school, you will also find an Atelier, our Art Studio. It is a place where children come to use many different materials as they express and develop theories about the world around them. It is a special workshop that provides the children the opportunity to interact with an array of materials that spark their curiosity as they discover and experiment. The atelier is a place for the individual exploration of projects connected with experiences projected in the different classrooms of our school or proposed by the Atelierista, the art studio teacher. It is a place for researching motivations and theories of children and a place for exploring variations of tools, techniques, and materials with which to work. Our Atelier is rich in its simplicity, displaying that which we really use; things we are connected to; things we consider beautiful, and things that are real to us because we are surrounded by them. This is a special place where children express their one hundred languages in many different ways!
Our school also has a kitchen where hot balanced organic meals are prepared and a dining area with large windows facing the outdoor playground. The children use the kitchen as another learning environment. Through real cooking experiences students cover mathematical and scientific concepts, planning, thinking, and time management skills. From one year olds to the students in the elementary program, children are given the opportunity to master cooking skills, encouraged to be creative, understand and learn about healthy eating habits while learning about responsibility and having tons of fun!
We have wall-sized windows and unbreakable mirrors placed on the floors, walls and ceilings that establish a space filled with opportunity. Rather than the usual store bought decorations that traditional schools have, our school’s walls are used as spaces for temporary and permanent exhibits of what the children and teachers are researching. The documentation panels cover the walls throughout the school as if they were a second skin. They substantiate the value of memory and narration as a right and a vital quality of our educational environment.
