My mother was at Laurel Park for short-term rehabilitation after surgery on June 30 for an IT hip fracture. She came home yesterday and we are both very thankful for the great care she had at the facility. The staff were very responsive to every request. The physical and occupational therapists are outstanding in knowledge and patience, and very caring. Hyacinth, Amy, Jarian, Indu, and Alyssa get 'gold stars.' The nursing staff were also very good with my mother, who needed wound care for her coccyx injury. Marika is a wonderful wound-care specialist who made every effort to coordinate with the CNA's when garments were being changed. Several outstanding CNA's are Lynnise, Shay, Pam, Tiffany and wonderful Erica. They have a lot to accomplish each day for many needy patients and are always kind and thorough. It is important for a family member to be present to help interact with the staff. Outstanding nurses are Marcia, Angela, Jimmy, and Carrie. Wonderful! In the shared rooms, it would be better to have earphones or headsets for TV viewing. My mother had trouble sleeping due to the very loud TV of her roommate left on all night. Temperature control was also an issue in the room. I eventually bought two room fans for my mother's side. Not every CNA was on top of their duties, but they were in the minority. For these reasons, one star was deducted. As my mother got better and her ability to walk and stand improved, she was helped with toileting as well. She did have to request this, but she was always accommodated. Even the OT helped her once and it counted as her therapy. The proximity to home was another plus for Laurel Park. It is clean and the grounds are pretty. By the way, my mother is 98 years old.
My mother's stay at Laurel Park after a fall and related health issues was a success, thanks to the dedicated and caring staff. The nursing staff provided excellent physical and emotional care, always taking the time to make my mother feel comfortable and supported. Despite being extremely busy, the staff always went the extra mile to put a smile on her face and meet her needs. I would only suggest that Laurel Park consider providing wireless earphones or headsets for the TVs in the rooms, to ensure a more peaceful experience for residents and their visitors.
My family wanted my grandfather to start to be mobile again after being in ICU for over a month. He supposed to had therapy for Speech, physical and Occupational. And also wound care. We visit the facility, and thought it was a good fit. But wasn't, they left him in bed without changing him or baths. Hardly seen a nurse or doctor. He constantly complained to them that he was in pain, but the doctor there only offered him Tylenol for a bed sore that didn't fully heal. And the case worker was hard to track down like the doctor who I don't think he really is. And come to find out 1 nurse has 28 patients. And don't go to the hospital during your stay because they will hand you a bill stating that the family has to cover the room when insurance stops paying for it due to you being in the hospital. This was the worst decision me and my family made for him. He is still not mobile.
The nursing staff is friendly but that's the only positive. The nurse call buttons don't work. Patients must continually hit a bell to get help. The smell of urine in the hallways is too much. There is no security. The clean up after an accident isn't always done thoroughly. The office staff Don't communicate with the family. Ombudsman needs to be called. Rooms aren't thoroughly cleaned up when someone leaves. The walls are in desperate need of repairs and paint
Well, I personally observed my loved one having a seizure. I informed the nurse who tried to convince me that it wasn’t a seizure. I had them call paramedics immediately. Paramedics confirmed that my loved one was indeed having seizures, and my loved one went on to have seizures literally every 10 mins or so. Had I not been there to witness the seizures myself there’s no telling how long this would have gone on without Laurel Park taking action. If it was possible to give them less than 1 star, I would. They are a horrible combination of lack of urgency and incompetence.
Absolutely horrible experience. Non caring staff, broken equipment, patients with mobility issues just left laying in bed all day. Rude staff. CNA left a fall risk patient sitting on edge of bed by themself and left the room. Then lied about it and became confrontational. Family member ended up in ER after being stable for months transferred to Laurel Park and in five days ended up with a week in the hospital. No follow up from management. Transferred my family member out of there.
I worked with a woman at Laurel Park for two months because the family was aware of the lack of staff and poor care she was receiving. Because of legalities I was not allowed to give her much true care, other than cleanliness of her space and emotional support, but I ran the halls all the time to accomodate the requirements of Laurel Park trying to find her care for everything from diaper changes to nutrition to transfers they would not allow me to do; "Can you please give some care?". There may be a couple of physical therapists that cared enough to not just check off the thirty minute session so they can move on to the next patient and accomplish nothing but you could go on line and find the appropriate exercises and do them with your loved one yourself. This woman was kept in her bed 90% of the time unless she was going to rehab or in a wheel chair for activity around the halls before I came along because her family didn't know better than what they were advised. I work with this same woman in her home and within days she walked on her own and has over the last months regained most of her ADL abilities. I only referred another family here because of the family time constraints and demographics. I was very disappointed they had the same experience. To Laurel Park the only positive thing I can say is that the place does not smell as bad as the rehab/nursing home I moved my Father out of, premature to the recommendations, after his stroke even though we were there as early as we were allowed and until late at night when they had to kick us out. I had to learn through the very undesirable experience. Here is the real point: Unless your loved one has an advocate in any facility you will not be satisfied with their care. They will suffer, period. My 88 year old Mom has had no health problems but if she develops them she will come straight home. Just because I have been in fitness my whole life and took the CNA course to see what it was all about does not make me an expert But it gave me enough insight to know when care is being given and when people are just showing up for a paycheck. Be Aware.
DO NOT SEND YOUR FAMILY HERE! ABSOLUTELY INHUMANE!!! My grandfather is staying here. The day after he arrived they had him lay in his wet bed for 2 DAYS! They have completely switched his medicine and refuse to listen to me when I explained to them that he has to have this medicine for the rest of his life due to a life altering car accident 18 years ago which still makes him suffer from severe pain. Day 3 he laid in his bed yelling for a nurse for so long because he was in excruciating pain. They did not do anything but transfer his room to the other side of the building. He got a sore throat and could barely eat that day. I left clothes out for him to be changed into before physical therapy 2 days ago and left a note asking for them to please put them on him so that he would be more comfortable and warm and he still has not been changed. Yesterday my brother visited and found my grandfather yelling for a nurse again and in tears because he was soaked and freezing AGAIN. Every time I go visit which is each afternoon and sometimes once before then he still has the same drinks from the day before and I have to ask for some water/ ice every time, if not I’m afraid he would have anything to drink. Just to get him transferred to another facility I called them 6 times, left a text and an email and finally received a response at almost 4 in the afternoon. They have ZERO respect for anyone that walks through the doors and most definitely there patients. THIS PLACE IS COMPLETELY INHUMANE! If I could rate it 0 stars I would!
I work for another hospital emergency dept in the metro area. My 90yo grandmother came here for therapy to return home. She is a fall risk requiring assistance to walk short distances. The staff allegedly refused to assist her to toileting. I can't tell you how profoundly disheartening it is to hear something like this. At her advanced age I really doubt she has any incentive to lie about something like this. Her roommate was coherent and seemed to validate the exchange between the staff. Wholly disappointed. We brought her home the very next day. It's shameful. They made such an incredible impression on my family. I was so pleased. Just for this catastrophe to follow up
Quite frankly they should fire a good portion of there staff and replace them with people who care. This is not to say all of those who work there are bad but the personal assigned to my loved one were flat out lazy. not only did they ignore the fact that my loved one needed a diaper change but they ignored our warnings and pulled out her feeding tude leading to her needing to go back into the hospital. Covered in brushes and worse for where. They also failed to contact me in the slightest when she was sent back to the hospital for surgery sighting her husband of witch she doesn't have oked it and signed for me. Not to mention cheating me out of several day of therapy witch they never administered now expecting me to pay for every day she says after this. All in all the receptionists are nice and helpful but a majority or the nursing staff even going to the head nurse should rethink there careers.
