Provides books to youth in prison to encourage imagination, self determination and connection to the outside world of their choosing.
Liberation Library is a volunteer-based group in Chicago that provides books to youth in prison to encourage imagination, self-determination and connection to the outside worlds of their choosing. We believe access to books is a right, not a privilege. We believe books and relationships empower young people to change the criminal justice system.
We currently partner with four Illinois Department of Juvenile Justice's facilities: IYC Harrisburg, IYC Pere Marquette, IYC St. Charles, and the Juvenile Temporary Detention Center. We ask the kids to tell us what books they want to read, and then go to work to get that book into their hands. Twice a month, Liberation Library hosts a packing day, where volunteers write notes and prepare books to be sent to our readers.
