I have been a mostly on member for many years. Suspended and cancelled my membership primarily due to Covid pandemic. I went to join again…not only is there a 50% increase in cost $129/month, there is an additional fee of $30 to use the pool. When I went to address this clearly in a pleasant tone not complaining, I just wanted to understand why the 50 percent increase in cost in membership along with even more money to use the pool. Zero sales pitch and I grudgingly accepted the cost of the gym membership but balked when they slipped in the pool cost at the end. At Shelby they could care less. Today at 10:00 am I went to speak to a membership advisor no one available in middle of the day??? that’s why i went at that time a woman at the front desk said you can quit and gave me a form. She ran me out so quick the form was not even filled out right. Let’s see if cancellation holds up. Buyer beware. My fault. They clearly only care about sales and clearly not service. If they can’t keep a lifelong “ lifetime member that’s on them not me.
I have been a member of the facility since 2013. In the winter of 2022 I had a health incident scare inside the spa hot tub. The electrical wiring was disconnected and exposed for quite a while. This was actually submerged in the water. I personally was in the tub for around 15 minutes and noticed. The area had additional currents and sparks. I immediately made aware of the matter to other members in the tub and exited myself after feeling a little nausea. I announced this to the guard on duty. She put signage and cautions up after clearing the area. I made a report and also sent a prior emailthis is the 2nd Notice to Lifetime fitness. The next day I visited my primary care doctor. This visit took note, because I still was not sure of my conditions that were affected and still was not 100 percent feeling right. I have spoken in the last few months about the incident to up front employees and the particular life guard and also just recently had a short conversation with the general manager Mr.Byrdall in which I initiated. I have not been contacted by any upper management or corporate employee or even an employee reaching out to via phone nor email on the incident. The professionalism of Lifetime so far is disappointing. Months have passed and still no contact from staff. Again this is the 2nd Notice....The low concern is not acceptable.
This gym has completely gone under. This is actually the first time I’ve had to type multiple reviews. $130 a month is fine if you actually have the equipment like Keiser, Sorinex, Rouge, Kabuki, to back up the price. The majority of all of techno gym equipment is over a decade old. This summer has been a complete zoo. Members vaping in the middle of sets & body odor everywhere. I know operations does a great job trying to do their best but the crowds are excessive and don’t do anything . Ultimate Hoops took a massive hit when pickleball took over courts. I already had a massive review about that. Letting Jason go was a mistake. There is only so much a GM can do with all the corporate red tape but Bahram and his executives seem to only care about Minnesota, Boca Raton, NYC. This is the only lifetime that has actually felt like a gym and not a Scientology resort that marketing tries to push it to be. At of the end of the day we are there to workout, train, and sport. I’m here almost everyday and my patience is severely tested more and more. I don’t blame the immediate staff this is a corporate issue and the way this gym is does not justify price ranges. Much better private facilities are available at cost. Please get it together we are not happy
The place is poorly managed and especially the manager or whoever is responsible to respond to claims never gets back to you. Some buys are too “friendly” in the locker room, making really inappropriate “compliments”, if you know what I mean. But that’s probably because the manager has their back. Send a message about it, no ever acknowledged it or respond to it. There are two or three employees on the evening shift it’s when I’m there who always do a good job, but the rest of the staff is really not interested in the place. Probably short staffed too, but in 2023 that is everyone’s problem. Anyway, makes it worth to drive 20 min away to the Rochester Hills location, to not have to put up with some of the stuff that happens in the locker room.
Love the gym but disappointed they are taken down one of the two basketball courts. Basketball has pretty much been cut off for the majority of members. Between leagues and camps that shut the now only court down multiple times a week, full court games are often played allowing around 20 people to play and hold the court for hours. On top of that the cleanliness has been going down hill and amenities are often low or out of stock on the counters.
$135 in cash was stolen from my locker around 10:45pm today March 23rd of 2023. I let the authorities know about this incident. Bunch on other guys had stuff stolen, I heard Fragrances, Cash, and Valuables. I ask that there needs to be a better security system in the place. My locker was open when I got off the swimming area with missing one pair of AirPods which was found by the manager later on. I really plan to stay a member here, but things like that can really deter me away and many other members who really care about their valuables. Please contact me if anything was found, or a month membership compensation can be granted for this incident. I left my name and my phone number with the staff members, feel free to contact. Thank you!
You would think that a gym this high end would warrant a higher rating, right? Sadly, the best I can do here is three stars. I’ll get to what I like, but I want to get my complaints out of the way. First off, good luck getting in your weight routine WITHOUT having to weight for machines. Especially during peak hours. Planet Fitness, the gym everyone likes to clown on, has two pec fly/delt fly machines, but Lifetime can apparently only afford one. Second, for the price, the experience isn’t all that exclusive. Wanting to work out at branch that has a bathroom on the second level costs an extra $30/month that was pretty much the only difference between here and the more expensive Rochester Hills location. Parking is always crammed and the other nearby locations aren’t much better. Third, the appointments in the pool and locker room area could be updated to not look rusted or outdated. Especially when this place brands itself as a “athletic club.” So why am I a member? First, this is literally one of two gyms in the area that can accommodate my spa circuit which would be inclusive with the membership. Second, unlike the other gym that can accommodate my spa circuit, this one has an abundance of cleaning stations the other had three - THREE - for the entire gym! We just got out of a pandemic and I don’t want to see another one! I’m glad Lifetime has an abundance of cleaning stations. Third, they do have yoga classes and for different skill levels. That’s a nice feature to have so one isn’t having to get a separate membership for that. The Lifespa and Cafe are nice to have, but since they aren’t inclusive, I don’t have a particular opinion on it one way or another if there was an incentive like a free 30 minute massage with a monthly renewal or a discount on coffee, I could feel differently. The best way I think the Lifetime experience could be better is if they expanded and found a location near M-59 and I-94 that could serve as a hub for Macomb, Chesterfield, New Baltimore, Clinton Twp, Mt. Clemens, and Harrison Twp as to perhaps help alleviate some of the congestion here. There’s no real competition for them, so will they rest on their laurels and be complacent, or will they work to make the experience better for those who are willing to shell out $100 or more a month to work out? I’d like to hope for the latter but time will tell.
Great gym, locker room is huge and is always clean. More amenities to offer then any other gym around. Miranda is very friendly and makes me smile every time I come in. Very good people.
Man, me and my family love this place so much. Wish we could go back. Me and 12 of my relatives all canceled a while back. Only reason I give it 3 stars and only reason why we canceled is because they aren’t 24/7 anymore and a lot people leave work around 11pm or midnight and start work super early in the morning. If only they went back 24/7. My whole family would sign up like that!
The photo of the men's shower area shows you what you need to know. I know this is a customer issue being this sloppy, but then the cleaning times should increase to prevent. Just received an email about a 20 dollar increase next month. At the high price, clean should be the default. To be fair, workout area and pools are always clean. After showering however, the smell and sloppy area are not what you want to walk through. Music is usually way to loud. I think it is something like 90% of the people there where headphones and I have to blast mine to drown out the sound. Needs to be turned down. It would be nice if something could be done to prevent the kids from taking selfies in the mirror. Other people are in there and should not have to worry about being in pictures with a cannot write the noun I want to use. In all seriousness however it is an issue and something should be done.
