Lincoln Borglum Museum

Description

The Lincoln Borglum Museum is located in the Mount Rushmore National Memorial near Keystone, South Dakota. It features two 125-seat theaters that show a 13-minute movie about Mount Rushmore. One of the best viewpoints is located at Grandview Terrace, above the Museum. The Presidential Trail, a walking trail and boardwalk, starts at Grandview Terrace and winds through the Ponderosa pine forests to the Sculptor's Studio, providing close-up views of the memorial. The Sculptor's studio was built by Gutzon Borglum, and features discussion about the construction of the monument as well as the tools used. The amphitheater also has a 30-minute program at dusk that describes the construction of the memorial. Following that, the mountain is illuminated for two hours.

After Touring Mt Rushmore on our trip from Massachusetts to Washington we came back down the road and these Carvings caught our eye. Magnificently Art Crafted wood carvings with impressive detail at Dahl's Chainsaw Art. All different type of objects. Worth stopping by to view them close up. You will be in Awe. I highly recommend the Stop. Learn about History.
The borglum museum was breathtaking it was truly amazing with so much history. Loved the vendors outside with the rock candles. Very unique.

Spent a week in Custer South Dakota and enjoyed driving around viewing the sites and enjoying the experience. Went to the Borglum Story Museum our last day. Paid $5 to park and found the advertised hours were wrong. It was closed on Sunday and Monday when the advertised hours showed it was open.
Very interesting museum for the whole family. We enjoyed our stop and learned lots. Employees were nice and helpful. There was local art set up in the parking lot, we bought some forever rock candles for souvenirs.
Nice museum to see the history of the sculptor of Rushmore before he did Rushmore. It is an audio guided tour. So it mostly sets the pace. If you don't have patience for it there is a shorter cheaper tour where you can look at some stuff at your own leisure. Both tours come with a movie to view, but I was not able to see it due to a fussy child.
My wife and I were plesantly surprised with our time visiting this private museum. The exhibits were interesting and informative and gave you a much better sense of the individual who is responsible for Mt. Rushmore. Borglum was a much more well established artist than I ever knew. It was interesting to learn about his experience at Stone Mountain, GA and that Rushmore was not his first encounter with sculptures this large. My wife an art teacher and I especially enjoyed Borglum's art works on display as well as the other pieces.
My wife and I visited this museum while in the Rapid City, SC area. It is heavily advertised all along the interstate as something you "must see" BEFORE visiting Mount Rushmore. We did and were not impressed. The lady at the front desk didn't act like she wanted to take the coupon we had and informed us that it would only apply if we took the more expensive tour. The coupon made no such designation but we opted for just the Borglum film and smaller tour. When we visited Mount Rushmore, we learned that they also have a film that in addition to being much longer and better than the one we paid to see at the museum, was also FREE. Save your money and see the free film at the Rushmore site.
Excellent museum to understand how Mt Rushmore was done and why. See why their eyes sparkle in the sunshine and the expression on their face changes. I highly recommend it!
