In 1979, former college professor, Jesse Schwartz, teamed up with a biodynamic farming and gardening teacher, John Kozak, to propagate organic heirloom apples and pears throughout California. In their 10 years farming in Marin County, Schwartz and Kozak saved the Hauer Pippin, Skinner’s Seedling and Pink Pearl apples from extinction, as well as introduced the Warren pear to California agriculture. Through his work with farmers in Mendocino County, the Santa Cruz Mountains and the Sierra Foothills, Schwartz understood the challenges of the organic farming industry and was determined to dedicate his business to support California family farmers.
Schwartz started Living Tree Community Foods in 1989. He focused on making quality nut butters to support California almond farmers. Living Tree Community Food’s process is unlike any other. The nuts are sliced and then rested overnight to ensure the least heat possible touches the nuts during the nut butter production process.
“We believe we have some inkling of the difficulties and challenges that farmers face every day,” Schwartz says earnestly, “Family farmers are the lifeblood of American agriculture and we feel privileged to work with and support them.” Quality, kindness and respect are the cornerstones on which Living Tree Community Foods is built.
