Waiting for the right buyer!
Before the turn of the century the Log Cabin was originally established as a private residence for the Abers Family. Soon it was turned into an icehouse with hay and sawdust for insulation. Parts of the original masonry walls for the icehouse still remain in the front room off of the entry. Ice was cut from the lake and sold to local businesses and residents.
Later, the ice leads to ice cream being sold for visitors along Big Bear Blvd. Finding success on warm summers selling cold refreshments, other foods began to be sold for the long journey up the hill. The earliest record of a restaurant is 1908. In the early 30’s they evolved into a deli, café and bakery. In the 40’s siblings Roy Odin, Charlie Odin and Zelia Hall with her husband took over the restaurant.
The next owners, George & Sigi Hakmannis came from Latvia in the 1950’s to continue the restaurant. With the addition of rooms and conversion of the warehouse to a duplex, the property took on more of the look you see today. Much of the recipe’s for the menu items originated from them.
In 1961 Serge & Josette Cahoreau came from Paris and bought the restaurant. They added the full liquor license. A menu on the wall is from them and you’ll notice the French cuisine.
Bob and Barbara Lecroy raised their family and ran the restaurant starting in 1973. They added the patio, and sold baked goods to local businesses. For 30 years, Barbara was always available with a smile and Bob would tell jokes in any of four languages. Their boys all managed the restaurant for a time. A temporary managing company was brought in to help in 2005, and Bob and Barbara decided to completely retire in 2008.
Dan Hoxie re-opened the Restaurant after repairs and improvements late in 2008. Big Bear now has it’s historic Log Cabin Restaurant back with traditional menu items and the down home atmosphere that has been so revered by locals and visitors alike. Come on down to the Log Cabin Restaurant and we hope it’s a great experience for you.
